What is individual behavior?
Certain individual characteristics are responsible for the way
an organism behaves in daily life situations as well as reacts
to any specific situations. These characteristics are
categorized as −
Inherited characteristics
Learned characteristics

Inherited characteristics
Innate and instinct behaviors
•Automatic, developmentally fixed
•Despite different environments, all
individuals exhibit the behavior

Reflexes
Two types of animal movement
1) Kinesis
2) Taxis

Kinesis
•Kinesis is a response to an
environmental condition by changing
the rate at whichan activity is
performed
•When an organism is in a place that it enjoys, it
slows down, and when in a bad environment, it
speeds up. Overall this leads to an organisms
spending more time in favorable environments

Pillbugs –pillbugs prefer moist environments

TAXIS
A reflex movement towards (positive taxis) or away
(negative taxis) from a stimulus
A taxis is said to be positive if the animal heads
directly towards the stimulus, negative if away from
it.

Types of Taxis-
1)Phototaxis
2)Chemotaxis
3)Geotaxis

KINESIS VERSUS TAXIS
Kinesis is directionless Taxis has direction

Innate Behavior
REFLEX
•Automatic response
to a stimulus
•Pulling your hand
away from heat
•Jumping at a loud
noise
INSTINCT
•Something you are
born knowing to do
•Building a nest
•suckling
