INTRODUCTION ▶ Radiopharmaceuticals are compounds containing radioactive isotopes used in medical imaging and therapy. ▶ Alpha, b eta, and gamma rays are types of ionizing radiation with distinct properties. ▶ Th i s p r e s e n t a t i o n d e l ve s i n t o t h e i r c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s a n d a pp li c a t i o n s i n healthcare.
RADIOPHARMACEUTICALS Radiopharmaceutical is a radioactive compound used for the diagnosis and therapeutic treatment of human diseases. Radiopharmaceutical has two components: ( i ) Radionuclide
(ii)Pharmaceutical
RADIOPHARMACUTI C A L S I N M E D I C I N E ▶ Radiopharmaceuticals play a crucial role in nuclear medicine for d i a g n o s i n g a n d t r e a t i n g d i s e a s e s . ▶ Examples include Technetium-99m for imaging and Iodine-131 for thyroid treatment. ▶ These compounds target specific tissues, aiding in accurate diagnostics a n d e f f e c t i v e t h e r a p i e s
ALPHA RADIATION ▶ Alpha particles consist of two protons and two neutrons, carrying a double positive charge. ▶ T h e y h a v e l o w pe n et r a t i o n but h i g h i o n i z a t i o n p o w e r . ▶ Medical applications include targeted alpha-particle therapy for certain cancer
BETA RADIATION ▶ Beta particles are high-energy electrons ( b eta-minus) or positrons ( b eta-plus). ▶ Beta radiation has greater penetration compared to alpha, making it useful in medical imaging and cancer treatment. ▶ Caution is needed due to the deeper tissue penetration.
GAMMA RADIATION ▶ Gamma rays are electromagnetic waves with no mass or charge. ▶ They possess high penetration capaǎilities and are commonly used in medical i m a g i n g , s uc h as P E T s c a n s . ▶ Stringent safety measures are essential to minimize exposure.
CONCLUSION ▶ Radiopharmaceuticals and ionizing radiation contri b ute significantly to modern medicine. ▶ Ongoing research and technological advancements promise continued improvements in diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic efficacy. ▶ The responsible and safe application of these technologies is paramount f o r t he betterment o f h e a l t h c a r e .
