I N T E G U MENTARY S Y STEM
*Integumentary System:* The integumentary system is the set of organs that forms the external covering of the body and protects it from many threats such as infection, desiccation, abrasion, chemical assault, and radiation damage.
1. Skin (epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis)
2. Specialized cells:
- Melanocytes (produce melanin for UV protection)
- Langerhans cells (immune function)
- Merkel cells (tactile sensation)
3. Sweat glands (regulate body temperature and excrete wastes)
4. Somatosensory receptors (detect touch, pressure, temperature)
5. Nociceptors (detect pain and noxious stimuli) C o m p o n ents
*Importance:* The integumentary system plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis, protecting the body from external damage, and facilitating sensory perception.
