INTRODUCTION The process of educating and examining the growing human child is as old as man himself. An examination, the word is most often used for an assessment of a person. It measures a test-taker's knowledge, skill, aptitude, physical fitness, or ability or standing in some other topic. It is a set of questions designed to measure those things.
CONCEPT OF EXAMINATION Examination Page and Thomas (1978) explain the concept of examination as: Assessment of ability, achievement or present performance in a subject. Instrument of assessment can be log essay or mixed form of assessment may be used for qualifying for entrance to professions and higher education.”
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TEST AND EXAMS The test is a tool to measure the knowledge level of your students and adjust the learning material accordingly. AND An exam or the examination is more formal and it tells you if a students passed or failed a class or course.
DEFINITION OF EXAMINATION Examination is a measuring instrument intended to verify both a candidates value and value of teaching he has received. Examination is a sub system in a wider system of evaluation, which measures both Qualitative as well as Quantitative aspects of a young human mind. It looks like target, incentive, motive or stimulant. It provides motives for the teacher and a spur for the pupils. Examination conditions and orientates the entire teaching process. (UNESCO-1961)
AIMS OF EXAMINATION To Judge the achievements of students in different areas such as knowledge, skills, personality development, strengths, weaknesses, creative thinking ect . To assess the students interests in studies and education. To identify learning skills and ability of students. To gain college credits. To provide a way to measure a Teacher and/or school's effectiveness.
TYPES OF EXAMINATION There are two types of examinations:
INTERNAL ASSESSMENT Credit obtained by the students for a team work in a subject in his or her school. It is a continuous periodic and internal. The education commission recommends: “Internal assessment should be built into the total educational program and should be used for the improvement rather than for certifying level of achievements.”
NEED FOR INTERNAL ASSESSMENT To give credit in internal assessment. To reduce tension associated with final examinations. To provide link for feedback in teaching. To evaluate sphere of activity this can not be alone through public exam. To provide opportunity to the teacher to evaluate his/her students. To induce students for continue learning.
BASIC PRINCIPLES Should be continuous and made by subject teacher. It does not replace exams. It uses suitable evaluation tools and techniques. Fix proportion of marks according to hours of instructions and importance of subject of nursing. Used as a feedback to improve teaching. Students should know their internal assessment marks before their final exams. Give opportunity to students to improve their internal assessment grade by additional tests, assignments etc. Results must be studied statistically. Improve a no. of components and weightages.
FEATURES OF INTERNAL ASSESSMENT It should be based on objectives, unbiased and based on all the records of unit test, practical tests, home work, class work, observational scales and inventories, participations in group project ect .
VALIDITY OF INTERNAL ASSESSMENT It is a powerful tool in the hands of a teacher there is a powerful tool in the hands of a teacher teacher there is like hood of its misuse. It becomes invalid if the teacher is biased, has prejudice against a particular pupil. The tool of internal assessment is very powerful if assessment is mode objectively and is free from bias.
ADVANTAGES No undue weightage is given to annual or external exams. Proper study will be engaged in study throughout the year. Students will be engaged in study throughout the year. They will be more regular, alert, science in students. Eleventh hour preparation in exams will be reduced to minimum. Internal assessment helps to reduce anxiety and prevent nervous breakdown in students. With exams, a person will be able to know his performance and knowledge. Sometimes with exams, it can create competition, which push the competitioners to do their best.
DISADVANTAGES A teacher may misuse it. It can cause a great harm in the hands of is inexperienced insincere teacher. It will lose its validity if favourism , personal prejudice and subjectively. For some people, exams make them stress. This is because there is too much pressure of their parents and teachers. During the exam, a person may also have problems with questions- Bad choice of questions. Irrelevant answers. For most failure who has got bad result, it will affect their future For some, it can change their character or lead to suicide. But most lose confidence in themselves.
EXTERNAL EXAMINATION An exam is an official test of knowledge. We have exams everywhere around the world. Youngs and adults can have exams; there is not a particular age to have exams.
REGULATION FOR EXAMINATION Eligibility for appearing for the examination: 80% of the attendance for theory and practicals . However 100% of attendance for practical before the award of degree.
CLASSIFICATION OF RESULTS 50% pass in each of theory and practical. 50%-59% second division 60%-74% first division. 75% and above is distinction For declaring the rank aggregate of 2 years marks to be considered.
Contd. If candidate fails in either practical or theory paper he/she has to reappear for both the papers maximum no. of attempts per subject is three inclusive of first attempt. The maximum period to complete the course successfully should not exceed 4 years. Candidate who fails in any two subjects, shall be permitted to continue the studies into the second year. The candidate shall not be allowed to appear for the second year examination till such time he/she passes all subjects of the first year M.Sc. Nursing examination.
EXAMINATION SCHEME Minimum pass marks shall be 50 % in each of the Theory and practical papers separately. A candidate must have minimum of 80% attendance (irrespective of the kind of absence) in theory and practical in each subject for appearing for examination. A candidate must have 100% attendance in each of the practical areas before award of degree. A candidate has to pass in theory and practical exam separately in each of the paper. If a candidate fails in either theory or practical paper he/she has to re-appear for both the and practical). papers (Theory All practical examinations must be held in the respective clinical areas. One internal and one external examiners should jointly conduct practical examination for each student An examiner should be M. Sc (N) in concerned subject and have minimum of 3 (three) years post graduate teaching experience.

Sometimes with exams, it can create competition, which push the competitioners to do their best Hence, it helps in developing one's own personality and confidence. If a person pass the exams and got a good result, it helps to get a scholarship which will bring to have a good job. (a good future)
