The introduction of international maritime organization The International Maritime Organization – is a specialized agency in the United Nations . IMO establish in Geneva on 17 th march 1948. It is purely concerned with maritime affairs effecting shipping. It helps to provide cooperation among governments on technical matters with special responsibility for the safety of life at sea (in short known as “SOLAS”), and to ensure that highest standards of safety of navigation are achieved . source ; ( https ://www.imo.org / ) 3
4 Structure of IMO .. A council and five main committees :- The maritime safety committee. The marine environment protection committee. Legal committee. The technical cooperation committee. The facilitation committee .
The objectives of IMO Facilitate co-operation among governments on technical matters affecting shipping ,particularly from, 1. Safety of life at sea (SOLAS) 2.Privention of maritime pollution.(MARPOL) 3. Exchange of information between nations. 4. Concluding an international agreements . 5
6 The number of countries in IMO.. To become a member of the IMO, a state ratifies a multilateral treaty known as the Convention on the International Maritime Organization. As of 2020, there are 174member states of the IMO, which includes 173 of the UN member states plus the Cook Islands. The first state to ratify the convention was the United Kingdom in 1949. The most recent members to join were Armenia and Nauru, which became IMO members in January and May 2018, respectively . Sri Lanka is a member of IMO since 1972.
