HISTORY , WORKING AND CHARACTERISTICS OF INTERNET DR . Roma.Smart . Joseph Teacher Educator Luckow , UP, India
What is internet? Internet is a largest computer network in the world connecting millions of computers.
History of internet The Internet has its roots during 1960s. There was a project of the United States government’s Department of defense, to create a non centralised network. This network was called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) Created to provide a secure and survivable communication network for organisation engaged in defense-related research.
Development of IP(Internet Protocol)- to make network more global Standard Protocol was invented in 1977 and called TCP/IP. TCP/IP allowed users to link various branches of other complex networks directly to ARPANET Which came to be known as INTERNET. NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) created a parallel network called NSFNet. Opened the door to all educational facilities, academic researches, government agencies and international research organisation.
WORKING OF INTERNET Computers on the internet are connected to each other through small networks. These networks are connected through the gateways to the Internet Backbone. They communicate using TCP/IP. TCP- breaks message into smaller packets and resembles these smaller packets into original message. IP- handles the address part of each packet.
HOW TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET INTERNET DIAL-UP CONNECTION BROADBAND CONNECTION WIRELESS CONNECTION
CHARACTERISTICS OF INTERNET Global Nature Spread in the whole world More than 190 countries are linked through this networks. Interactivity It interacts with the readers and users unlike television and newspapers Accessibility Easily access websites published by others. Establish one’s own website
Heterogeneity (diverse character) Heterogeneous based on different hardware platforms and networks Interact with other devices through different networks Connectivity Connectivity enables accessibility and compatibility
