Introduction Internet Protocol television ( IPTV ) is a system through which television services are delivered using the Internet, instead of being delivered through traditional signal , and cable television formats . It can be classified into 3 main groups; Live television T ime-shifted television V ideo on demand (VOD )
IPTV market The number of global IPTV subscribers is expected to grow from 28 million in 2009 to 110 million in 2014.
Features Interactivity Record , watch and pause live tv Multiple users without affecting the performance. VOD Fast and of HD quality
A Revolution True interactive television See anything you want to see , any time , any where and on any device. Reduced infrastructure cost It works on your existing internet connection Infinite number of channels
World wide subscribers
Some examples Schools Hotels Hospitals
Benefits Content remains in the network Parental controls Can be recorded and stored Live tv and VOD Offers more channels Ability to use cell phone 2 way communication . eg . A game show
Disadvantages Set-top boxes are expensive and if you want to watch another channel on different TV you will have to buy another box. If the IPTV connection is not fast enough , picture break – up or loss may occur. Because IPTV uses internet , it is sensitive to delays if the streamed data is unreliable and also when the customer decides to switch the channel.
Conclusion IPTV is definitely a part of the future in television, even though it only will be an option for those with a high bandwidth broadband. But hopefully all in India will have access to high bandwidth broadband, though it probably will not happen in the near future, then it would be an option for everyone.
