Interprofessional Education Dr. Ashok Mhaske

Discuss

Why now?

Shortage of 4.3 million health workers world-wide ( Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education & Collaborative Practice . WHO, 2010)

Professions that participate in IPE include - but are not limited to: Dentistry, Nursing (including nurse practitioners or nurses with advanced degrees), Pharmacy, nutrition, physical therapy, occupational therapy, social work, emergency medical services including paramedics. Any medical or allied health professional that engages in patient assessment, care, and/ or management may be included in IPE.

IPE is a transparent blend of disciplines coming together with shared goals.

Interprofessional Education Inter-professional education (IPE) approach allows learners from different health professions  viz . – medical, dental, nursing, physiotherapy, psychotherapy, psychology etc., learn from, learn with, and learn about, each other.

Interprofessional Education learn "from", "with" and "about"

Overcome - barriers Accept the challenges each other faces Acknowledge each other’s expertise Provide accessible information (jargon free etc.) Keep communication channels open, even if you disagree

In the 20 th Century, team members were resources for the physician as the decision maker. In the 21 st Century – team members are responsible for key decisions in the patient’s care together with the physician.

Always keep the vision in the forefront. It is about improving patient care.
