The Biomolecule Showdown: Battle for Cell Supremacy!
BIOMOLECULES Biomolecules are Organic Molecule Molecules containing Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, and Oxygen All are polymers All are organic (C) compounds They make up living organisms
A B
CARBOHYDRATES Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for most organisms. Simple sugars, like glucose, are broken down to provide energy, while complex carbohydrates like starch provide longer-lasting energy storage.
PROTEINS Proteins are essential for growth, repair, and carrying out cell functions. They are made up of amino acids, and they help form enzymes, muscle fibres , and antibodies.
LIPIDS Lipids (fats and oils) store energy and form cell membranes. They provide insulation and help protect organs, as well as play a role in cell signaling.
NUCLEIC ACIDS Nucleic acids, such as DNA and RNA, store and transmit genetic information. DNA holds the instructions for building proteins and passing on hereditary traits.
FUNCTIONING UNIT MONOMER DIMER POLYMER
FUNCTIONING UNIT MONOMER- “Mono-” means ONE. Put two monomers together, and you get a DIMER- Di-” means TWO. Once several monomers are put together, we get a POLYMER- “Poly-” means MANY.
GLOSSARY Amino acids: Building blocks of proteins. Carbohydrates: Molecules made of sugars that provide energy. DNA: Nucleic acid stores genetic information. Enzyme: A protein that speeds up chemical reactions. Lipid: F ats and oils used for energy storage and membranes. Nucleic acids: DNA and RNA, molecules carrying genetic code. Protein: A molecule essential for body structure and function.
Choose one of the questions to explain for a minimum of 3 sentences. Write your answer on ½ sheet of paper. Why do you think marathon runners eat a meal rice in carbohydrates the day before the race? What are some economic/ industrial applications of each biomolecule? Which food may be used for building body parts? How important is nucleic acid to one’s life?
At the back of your ½ sheet of paper, answer the following question. Classify the following whether it is in the classification of MICROMOLECULES or MACRO MOLECULES. 1.RNA 2. magnesium 3.wheat 4.Alanine 5. iron
