Internet of Things (IoT)
Modern digital networks make all of this possible.
Sensors are everywhere generating massive amounts of data.
◦Smart home/office : motion sensors, light sensors, doorbell sensors,
temperature sensors
◦Smart traffic : sensors in traffic light, transport trucks, parking garages,
security cameras
◦Self-driving cars : ultrasound sensors, cameras, precision GPS

Slide 5
Internet of Things (IoT)
Refers to the ever-growing network of physical objects that feature an
network connectivity, and the communication that occurs between
these objects and other network- enabled devices and systems.
Sensors and measuring devices collect and transmit their data
Data can be:
◦Stored and analyzed at a later date
◦Analyzed immediately (machine learning) to be used to perform related
processes

Network Types
Personal Area Network (PAN)
◦Personal area networks are small networks where connected wireless
devices are within personal reach LAN

Network Types
Local Area Network (LAN)
◦LANs are typically networks in a small or local geographic area, such as a
home, small business or department within a large corporation
◦Can be wired, or wireless
Wide Area Networks (WANs)
◦The term WAN typically refers to a collection of LANs that provides inter-LAN
and Internet connectivity for businesses and governments.

The Cloud
◦It is a collection of data centers or groups of connected servers that are used to store and analyze data, provide access to on-line applications,
and provide backup services for personal and corporate use.
Slide 8
Network Types
The Edge
◦The edge refers to the physical “edge” of a corporate network.

Fog Computing
◦Often, there is a need to store the
sensor data securely and closer to
where the data can be analyzed.
◦The pre-processed data can be used
immediately to update or modify
processes within the organization.
◦The fog is located at the edge of a
business or corporate network. The
pre-processed data can then be sent
to the cloud for more in-depth
computing if required.

Assignment
You are required to perform some study about LoRa and present your
findings about it. Your presentation (~10-15 mins) should at least include the
following topics:
1.What is LoRaWAN in IoT?
2.What is the basic specification of LoRa (wireless modulation)? You may
focus on specifications in North America.
3.What is the advantages and limitation of LoRaWAN ?
4.How is LoRaWANcompared to other IoT/WAN/cellular network
technology?
5.Basic network architecture of LoRaWAN
6.Give an application of LoRa in IoT if you would have a chance to build
one.
