Introduce Yourself Presentation speaking skill in English Information technology Serang Raya University
2 Sometimes you have LESS than 60 seconds to introduce yourself 2
When do you need an introduction yourself?
At some networking events, you stand and give a quick introduction: NAME & JOB or BUSINESS 4
Or when presenting to company executives you give a quick introduction: NAME, ROLE, DEPARTMENT AND LOCATION
An introduction sounds easy, but often people… stumble, fumble & mumble
Don’t waste the opportunity to make a good impression
Remember the following guidelines when doing A n introduction 8
Prepare What will you say? (think about what matters to this audience)
Practice Out loud
P r a c tice in front of the mirror
Practice saying your introduction without filler words… I mean… Kinda… Uh… Like r e a l l y… I guess… Um … Ya kno w… Sorta … 12
Communicate S e l f - Co n f i d e n ce If you don’t communicate self- confidence, then how can the audience be confident about what you say?
14 How can you communicate s el f - co nfidence? 14
Speak loudly, slowly & clearly enough to be heard and understood
Remember, it’s the first time the audience is hearing your name R eme m ber, it’s the first time the audience is hearing your name (though you’ve heard it all your life) 16
Smile Smiling helps you look relaxed & communicates warmth and sincerity 17
Make eye contact If you don’t have time to look at everyone - pick a few key people
Stand up straight Shoulders back, head up, weight evenly distributed on both feet 19
If you’re seated Sit up straight, keep hands on the table & feet firmly on the ground
These guidelines also apply if you’re introducing yourself to one person instead of a group
And here are more guidelines for introducing yourself to one person
Shake hands firmly while making eye contact & smiling
Listen to the other person’s introduction and comments
Focus on the person you’re introducing yourself to
(and receive theirs respectfully) Give your business card if asked - or ask permission to give it
Here are some examples of introductions
"Good morning. I'm D aniel Mananta , the Customer Service Supervisor at the Simpati Call Center.” Example (within a company):
"Good afternoon. I'm Natasya Rider . I own and operate Print Plus, a full- service print and copy store in Mall of Serang .” Example (outside a company):

Follow these step to introduce yourself, here the simple way
Introduce yourself Who are you? What is your background? What are your interests? What are your talents? What are your achievements? What challenges have you faced? 35 35
Start with a short list of your talents and interests. If you are not sure where to start, or if you are limited to one thing for the assignment, start by making a list. Brainstorm good ideas that will help you decide, then sketch out as many different answers as you feel necessary. 36 36
Narrow your topic Pick one specific topic, describe it in detail, and use that to introduce yourself. It is better to pick one thing and use a lot of detail, than to give someone a big long list of general items . What is your most interesting or unique quality? What word(s) describes you the best? Choose that topic. 37 37
Use a few good details. When you have a specific topic to narrow in on, give the reader unique details to hold onto. Remember, you are describing yourself and add details that show you in a positive light. Bad : I like sports. Ok : I'm a fan of basketball, football, tennis, and soccer. Good : My favorite sport is football, both to watch and to play. Better : When I was growing up, I would watch Big Ten football with my dad and brothers every Saturday, before we'd go outside and toss the football around. I've loved it ever since. 38 38
Be humble. Even if you are very accomplished or talented, you want to come across like a down-to-earth person. Do not write about yourself to brag. List your accomplishments and your successes, but temper them with some more humble language: Braggy: I'm the best and most dynamic worker at my company right now, so you should want to hire me for my talents. Humble: I was lucky enough to be awarded three employee of the month awards at my current job. Turns out it was a company record. 39 39
