A good introduction is essential to get a speaker off to a good start.
A speech of introduction introduces the main speaker at an event and inspires the audience to listen to that speaker (O’Hair & Stewart, 1999).
What is the primary goal of an introduction? prepare the audience and get them excited for what they are about to hear
A good introduction should answer THREE questions What is the topic? Why is this topic important for this audience? Why is the speaker qualified to deliver this talk?
The introductory speech usually has three components: (a) provide a brief backdrop or background of the main speaker, (b) introduce the speaker’s topic, and (c) an invitation from the audience to warmly welcome the speaker.
Why do we introduce a speaker? It shows respect for the speaker. It lets the audience know who this person is before they start, in case there is no printed program. It can show why this person is qualified to speak about the topic and share their insights. It settles the audience down and gets them focused on the stage.
The introducer’s job is to 1. Remind the audience why the topic is important to them 2. Establish the speaker’s qualifications to speak on the topic 3. Get the presentation off on a high note by establishing an up-beat tone 4. Make the speaker feel especially welcome
While a strong speech opening is vital, nothing helps establish a speaker’s credibility more than a carefully-crafted and well-delivered introduction.
Tips to Consider in Introducing a Guest Speaker/a Resource Speaker
1. Know the occasion.
2. Get to know the speaker. Talk to him or her Interview Research
Points to be covered in an introductory speech Reference to the occasion Who the speaker is Why he is important Human-interest material about him/her
Points to be covered in an introductory speech His subject Its importance or significance Anticipation of pleasure in listening in him/her Presenting the speaker to the audience
Important details Achievements Credentials Educational background Work experiences Position/title Family information If it is a professional forum, do not talk about the guest speaker's family unless you ask them first.
3. Plan how to arrange the gathered information about the speaker.
How long? Keep it short. Keep your introduction to between 45 seconds to 3 minutes. Remember: You are not the star
“Brevity is the soul of wit.” -William Shakespeare
Before you start writing an introduction, find out, does the speaker have a prepared Introduction?
4. Write down the speech.
5 . Revise the speech.
6 . Practice delivering the speech.
7 . Be positive and enthusiastic.
Additional Reminders
Should you attempt humor?
Don’t give an outline of the speech. Don’t overdo it. Avoid cliches. Build to a climax.
One effective way to do this is to end with the speaker’s name and explicitly encourage applause: Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming our guest speaker, Donna Primeau !
Ensure a smooth transition.
“Good morning ladies and gentlemen. It’s a great pleasure for me to introduce our speaker today, who is going to talk to us about the ten most common personal financial planning mistakes. This is a subject in which we should all be deeply interested because it’s by avoiding financial mistakes that we can best ensure our financial futures. Our speaker, although having spent almost his entire career advising people on their finances in places like New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, grew up about thirty miles from where we are right now.
He is an award-winning professional accountant who has specialized in personal finances and taxation for over twenty years, and has guided the financial affairs of some of this country’s best-known athletes, entertainers, entrepreneurs and executives. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming home, Steve Robbins!”
The person giving our keynote address is someone we all know and admire. Not only is Dr. Brian Garcia an alum of our university and department, but he has gone on to make major contributions to our field. As one of our nation’s foremost experts in end-of-life care and communication, Dr. Garcia has written over 50 journal articles and book chapters on this field. We are privileged today to hear him speak on hospice care and the Hispanic population. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Brian Garcia.
