About This Presentation

A quirky look at things to consider if you are doing your Introduction. Especially useful for those doing Saltburn and Yarm...

Slide Content

So, young Ross. How is your GCSE coursework
introduction going? What have you got for your
expectations? Hypotheses?

He may as well be talking another
language! Think! What do | expect
to find? Lets think back. | was
doing my shopping survey.

Ok...so this was Yarm. What did we

notice about the shop sizes compared to

Saltburn? That's a pretty neat window score too.
We scored them out of twelve....l seem to remember
this one got a high score...not sure from memory
that the ones in Saltburn were quite so good...

| seem to remember
it being really busy too...what do we
call those things we did? Pedestrian counts. I'm trying

to think whether it was as busy as that in Saltburn...

. and then we went to Saltbum.

This shop had upper storey use.

| But I reckon there weren't
many with upper storey use in
Saltbum. Were there more in
Yarm? Anyway, better get off
this car before I'm shouted at

Ross...Ross....ROSSSSSSS! Are
you even listening to a word | say?
Expectations? Hypotheses?

Oh....sorry sir....but I'm not quite
sure what you mean by
EXPECTATIONS....or by
HYPOTHESES...

Expectations - what you expect to
find out. Hypotheses are statements

you set up. You can then test whether
the statement can be accepted or not

based on the evidence...

Right...so he said the hypotheses are statements.
Like ‘All Geography teachers are sad". Ha! | guess
I'd have to give some reasons why | think this will
be the case! Anyway - how about these... Window
scoreswill be higher in Yarm than Saltburn’. But
why would | say that?

I'd need to think what hypotheses

I could set up for shop sizes. nc
pedestrian counts....and the questionnaire
- perhaps how far people are prepared to
travel. Will they travel further to one place
than the other?

I'm sure | heard something in class
once about having to link ideas...
maybe if | include two things in my
hypotheses - maybe window
scores and shop sizes...how might

they be connected?

I'm not sure that boy took in a word | said. If only he thought
carefully about a logical structure. Perhaps | should have said

(1) Start by setting out some hypotheses. Statements to test.
He should look to include 5-7 hypotheses or statements.

(2) Say why you would expect these things to be the case . You
should go into real detail here. Use your geography understanding
(3) You should include some geographical terms too. Minimum

Threshold Value - the minimum number of customers needed
for a shop to break even and then make a profit;

sphere of influence - how far people are prepared to travel

to each town; elasticity of demand - whether shops can attract
people in through attractive window scores. You'd need to
decide how these apply to Saltburn and Yarm.

Instead he's doomed

and so am I! My exam

results....down the drairl!
