LECTURE 1
INTRODUCTION:
The roles of Engineering
Survey in Construction
Industries
4
Construction industries can be
classified into two:
Industrial works
Physical development construction
5
Industrial works/ business
Supporting construction activities, such as:
for the production of construction
materials i.e. metal, steel, electrical
components, sewage, sanitary, air
conditioning, painting, tiling, etc.
6
Physical development
constructing buildings on
ground/land
Residential : house, hotel,
banglo, terrace, condominium,etc
7
Non residential :
Social, economy and religion: e.g hospital,
mosques, temples, shopping centres,
schools, offices, hotels, airports,etc
Security and defense: army camp, police
station, etc
Sport and recreation: stadium, swimming
pool, etc.

ES involvement:
Design stage: Provide ‘detailed map’ for preparing
layout plan, designing of the proposed building/
monument
Construction and Setting out stage: Establishing
Horizontal as well as Vertical control at the site,
directly involve in construction activities
Checking and Monitoring stage: relevant tests and
analyses
15
“Engineering surveys establish control points by
traverse, baseline, or other methods to obtain
information required for engineering designs and to
set out construction from design drawings by use of
these control points. Topographic surveys, and the
maps produced by them, provide horizontal location
information and elevations needed for the design of
structures such as buildings, dams, canals, highways,
bridges, transmission lines, and sewers. Using the
engineering designs these works are then laid out
from the same control points used in the original
engineering surveys”. (http://encarta.msn.com)

DURING AND AFTER ANY ENGINEERING WORKS”

Establishing controls and acquiring data using satellite-based
technology, e.g.GPS

Monitoring works
To ensure that the buildings/
constructions in good and safe
according to specified standard
