DEFINATIONS ORTHOSIS The Orthosis is an external mechanical appliance, that applies forces on body segments in order to provide Stability, support, correction and assistance to Neuromusculoskeletal system. 2

DEFINATIONS Orthotics: Orthotics is the science of designing, fabrication and fitting of Orthoses Orthotist : The Orthotist is a specialist who designs, fabricates and fits an Orthosis . 3

DEFINATIONS According to ISO, An Orthosis is an externally applied device used to modify the structural or functional Characteristics of the neuromusculoskeletal system. The term Orthotics describes the theory, practice, and manufacture of Orthoses . The Orthotist is a person skilled in the field. 4

DEFINATIONS The term Orthosis is derived from the Greek word ”Ortho” meaning straight, upright, or correct. These all are suitable descriptions of the functions of most of the Orthoses – to help maintain straight limbs or correct a spine that is not upright. The Lower Limb Orthoses or LLOs are the most commonly used and prescribed Orthoses in clinical practices. 5
