The Origin of Tabla
Tabla was invented in India from the late 18
th
century.
It is a traditional percussion instrument belonging to the North India
heritage. And is a part of North India music and also has its own
significant importance.
It is an instrument that can be played by an individually as a solo
performer.
Which is also the capable to accompany different genres of music.
It is maybe true that Tabla was invented by a drummer named Amir
Khusru.
The second assumption is that is connect to the Indian mythology which
told that Lord Ganesh once while playing the parental Indian instrument
pakhavaj, accidentally dropped and that’s how the partition gave us tabla
The Origin of Tabla
This theory is based on the etymological links of the wordTablato
Arabic wordtabla which means "drum". Beyond the root of the word,
this proposal points to the documentary evidence that the Muslim
armies had hundreds of soldiers on camels and horses carrying paired
drums as they invaded the Indian subcontinent. They would beat
these drums to scare the residents, the non-Muslim armies, their
elephants and chariots, that they intended to attack. However, the
war drums did not look or sound anything likeTabla, they were large
paired drums and were called has noise marker.

Delhi Gharana :
▪It was founded by Ustad Siddhar Khan in the early 18
th
century. Its
playing style was called Delhi Baaj.
Lucknow Gharana :
▪It was founded by the grandson of Siddhar Khan who was Ustad Miyan
Bakshu Khan. In the 19
th
century, it was also considered an offshoot of
Delhi Gharana. The playing style was called Lucknow Baaj.
Farrukhabad Gharana :
▪It was founded by Ustad Vilayat Ali Khan. In the 19
th
century. Its
playing style was called Farrukhabad Baaj.

Banaras Gharana :
▪It was founded by Ustad Ram Sahai. In the 19
th
century. Its playing
style was Banaras Baaj
Panjab Gharana :
▪It is the youngest among all the gharana.it founded by Ustad Saddha
Hussain in the 19
th
century. The playing style was called Punjab Baaj.
And it became famous by the father and son duo.
▪Named Ustad Allah Rakha Khan and his son Ustad Zakir Hussain.

Zakir Hussain :

March 1951 In Mumbai
❑He was a world-famous tabla player, composer, percussionist, music
producer, and film actor.
❑He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002,
and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023 by the government of India. On 8
th
February 2009 for the 51
st
Grammy Awards, he won the Grammy in the
Contemporary World Music Album category for his collaborative album
Global Drum Project with Mickey Hart and others.
❑He was also wanted the Government of India Sangeet Natak Akademi
Award in 1990 and he get many more awards later too.
