Intelligent Personal Assistants Azzam Abdullah Alfahad 421103344

Introduction The communication with devices using the voice is nowadays a common task for many people. Intelligent Personal Assistants (IPA), such as Amazon Alexa, 1  Microsoft Cortana, 2  Google Assistant, 3  or Apple Siri, 4  allow people to search for various subjects, schedule a meeting, or to make a call from their car or house hands-free, no longer needing to hold any mobile devices. These intelligent assistants make use of Natural Language User Interfaces (NLUI) to interact with users and provide information about the weather, maps, schedule, call, events, etc. (Santos, Rodrigues, Casal , Saleem, & Denisov, 2017). NLUI allow Human-to-Machine (H2M), Human-Device Interaction (HDI) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), which involves the translation of human intention into devices’ control commands through speech recognition ( Drosdov , Díaz-Sánchez, Almenárez , Arias- Cabarcos , & Marín, 2017). These gadgets present the advancements of artificial intelligence (AI), speech recognition, semantic web, dialog systems, and natural language processing, consolidating the concept of an IPA. The term IPA is known as a system that can understand, respond to spoken inputs, and process the user request (Santos et al., 2017). As people are interacting by voice with an increasing number of devices, the conversation is becoming an essential mode of human-computer interaction (Luger & Sellen , 2016). The benefits are not only voice control but also the dialogue-style nature of the interactions ( Kiseleva  et al., 2016a).

What is Alexa? Alexa is a voice-controlled virtual assistant. She can play audio, control your smart home, answer questions and engage your favorite services to keep you organized, informed, safe, connected and entertained. As a product of Amazon, she’s also your personal shopper. Based in the cloud, Alexa is accessed through a growing number of smart speakers and other Alexa-enabled devices.

When Alexa created? Alexa was inspired by science fiction: According to David Limp, Amazon’s senior vice president who oversaw the initiative, Alexa creators aimed to reinvent the conversational computer onboard  Star Trek ’s Starship Enterprise. She made her debut in 2014 alongside the Echo smart speaker. In addition to suitable phonetics, Alexa’s name intends to evoke Egypt’s  Ancient Library of Alexandria

What can Alexa do? Alexa is like the software that powers your smartphone, but instead of apps, she uses “skills.” Like your smartphone, Alexa includes many skills out-of-the-box, while others can be enabled by choice. Amazon’s  skills collection  already exceeds 25,000, including many from brands you use frequently. That collection grows by the day.

What is Siri? Siri is Apple's virtual assistant for iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS devices that uses voice recognition and is powered by artificial intelligence (AI).Siri responds to users' spoken questions by speaking back to them through the device's speaker and presenting relevant information on the home screen from certain apps, such as Web Search or Calendar. The service also lets users dictate emails and text messages, reads received emails and messages and performs a variety of other tasks.

History of Siri Siri was derived from a combination of multiple sources, and was used by SRI International, a non-profit research institute, developed by Project CALO to start the spin-off project that would eventually lead to the creation of Siri. Nuance Communications, a software company based in Burlington, Massachusetts, provides the speech recognition technology that makes Siri possible. The SRI International team members decided to form a new startup called Siri, Inc. In 2007.In 2010, Apple acquired Siri, Inc., which then led to the current incarnation of Siri as a native feature on some iOS devices. The service first appeared on the iPhone 4S in 2011.

What can Siri do? Siri can do a lot. She's clever and sometimes she is quite funny too. If you want to get a giggle out of Siri rather than ask her to do something serious, then check out our guide to the best Siri Easter Eggs. Otherwise, Siri can help you when you're out and about, in the car if you have a CarPlay compatible car, with sports and entertainment information, phone calls and messages, getting organized, tips and tricks and of course, giving you answers.

What’s the Difference? Device Compatibility Alexa : has a broader reach. It is available on  Amazon Echo devices , Fire TV, and select third-party smart devices. Siri : These include  iPhones ,  iPads ,  Macs , Apple Watches, Apple TVs, and  HomePods . If you are already invested in Apple’s ecosystem, Siri may be the more convenient choice . Smart Home Integration Alexa boasts extensive support for various smart home devices, from lights and thermostats to security systems Siri , however, is limited in this regard, as it only supports Apple HomeKit-enabled devices. Additionally, it offers limited third-party integration Third-Party App Integration Alexa comes out on top. In fact, it has a vast selection of Alexa Skills, which supports thousands of third-party apps. Siri , while featuring Siri Shortcuts and some third-party app support, leans heavily on integrating with Apple’s native apps Voice Recognition Alexa also offers good voice recognition capabilities, but it might not be as accurate or adaptive as Siri. When it comes to voice recognition, Siri is known for its accuracy and adaptability. Privacy Alexa stores voice recordings on Amazon servers (though users have the option to delete them). if privacy is a major concern, Siri might be the more appealing choice due to Apple’s commitment to protecting user data Privacy is an important consideration when choosing a voice assistant. Siri places a stronger emphasis on privacy, with voice recognition performed locally on the device. Alexa vs. Siri: 10 Must-Know Facts Alexa was developed by Amazon, while Siri is a product of Apple Inc. Alexa was first introduced in 2014, whereas Siri made its debut in 2011. Siri has a more conversational tone, while Alexa’s responses tend to be more direct and informative. Alexa’s voice  is generated using Amazon’s text-to-speech technology, while Siri uses Apple’s custom text-to-speech engine. Siri can be used hands-free only on select devices. Contrastly , Alexa can be used hands-free on all compatible devices. Both voice assistants are continuously updated and improved by their respective companies, with new features and capabilities added regularly. Both Alexa and Siri can perform basic calculations and answer general knowledge questions. However, Alexa is known for its vast knowledge base, courtesy of Amazon’s partnership with various data providers. Siri offers more personalized experiences, learning from users’ habits and preferences. On the other hand, Alexa focuses more on providing a wide range of features and compatibility with third-party devices and services. Alexa can recognize different users’ voices and personalize responses accordingly, whereas Siri currently lacks this feature. Siri supports more languages than Alexa, offering a more inclusive experience for users who speak languages other than English.

Alexa vs. Siri: Pros and Cons Pros of Alexa Cons of Alexa Alexa can be used across a wide range of devices. For example, Amazon Echo devices, Fire TV, select third-party smart devices, and smartphones via the Amazon Alexa app. Voice recordings are stored on Amazon servers, which may raise privacy concerns for some users. However, there is an option to delete the recordings. Alexa supports a vast array of smart home devices, thus making it an ideal choice for users looking to create a fully integrated smart home ecosystem. While Alexa’s voice recognition is good, it may not be as accurate or adaptive as Siri’s, particularly when it comes to different accents or dialects. With thousands of Alexa Skills available, users can customize their experience with a multitude of third-party apps. This enhances the voice assistant’s overall functionality.

Alexa vs. Siri: Pros and Cons Pros of Siri Cons of Siri Siri is designed to work effortlessly with Apple devices. This makes it a convenient choice for those already invested in Apple products. Siri is primarily available only on Apple devices. Subsequently, this may not appeal to users with a mix of devices from different manufacturers. Siri performs voice recognition locally on the device and places a strong emphasis on user privacy, ensuring that personal data is better protected. Siri’s smart home compatibility is limited to Apple HomeKit-enabled devices. Therefore, it offers less flexibility compared to  Alexa’s extensive smart home  support. Siri excels in voice recognition, adapting to a user’s voice over time for more accurate responses. However, it lacks multi-user support. Siri has limited third-party app support and relies heavily on Apple’s native apps. This may not be ideal for users seeking a more customizable experience.
