Introduction to an automobile

Automobile Automobile is a self-propelled vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine and is used for transportation of passengers and goods on ground. Example bus, car, jeep, truck, tractors, scooter, motor cycle. The modern automobile consists of a frame supporting the body and certain power developing and transmitting units which are further supported by tyres and wheels. Engine supplies the power, which is delivered by the transmission system to the wheels through the clutch or fluid coupling

Automobile engineering It is a branch of engineering in which we study all about the automobiles and have practice to propel them.

Brief history of Automobile In 1967 French engineer captain Nicholas Cugnot build the first road vehicle propelled by its own power In 1801 first steam carriage build by Richard Trevithick in England In 1804 Oliver Evans build the finest American self-propelled steam vehicle In 1827 Onesiphare Pacqueur of France invented first differential In 1832 first 3 speed transmission patened by W.H James in England In 1880 German and French developed an internal combustion engine vehicle. The present automobile is the development of this vehicle

In 1885 Benz in Germany developed tricycle propelled by an internal combustion engine In 1886 one of the first gasoline engine powered automobile by Gottlieb Daimler of Germany In 1894 Panhard and Levassor in France developed a car which incorporated the chief feature of the automobile In 1895 first motor car race was held In 1897 First car arrived in India In 1900 the design of automobile was improved, it awaken the public to the fact that this new form of transportation was really practical for use. In 1902 first volume of production car ‘the curved dash oldsmobile ’ in America

In 1906 the production and sale of these vehicles became a business In 1908 ford ‘t’ model car produced in america by Ford motor company (initial run of 20000vehicle) In 1911 first electric self starter was installed in automobile . In 1920 there was gradual change and refinement in automobile.

Germany is the birth place of automobile In India the first motor car appeared in 1897 In 1943 and 1944 two automobile factories namely, Hindustan motor limited, Calcutta and premier automobile limited , Bombay was set up in India. JN Tata was the first Indian to buy a car in India. [1] He bought Crompton Greaves, the first car to come to India in 1897. [2] It was owned by an English man, Mr Foster of Crompton Greaves. [3] The following year, Jamshedji Tata, a wealthy Indian businessman, became the first Indian to register a car

Classification of Automobiles Purpose 1. passenger carriers- car, jeep, bus etc Goods carrier- truck 2. Fuel used Petrol vehicle-motor cycle , scooter, cars, station wagon Diesel vehicle-trucks, busses etc 3.Gas vehicle-coal, gas, turbine 4.electric-using storage batteries Steam-using steam engine

capacity HTV(heavy transport vehicle) HMV(heavy motor vehicle)-trucks busses, dumpers etc LTV(Light transport vehicle)-pick up, station wagon LMV(light motor vehicle)-Jeep, Cars Medium vehicle- station wagon, tempo, minibus, and small trucks

Construction Single unit vehicle Articulated vehicles and tractors

drive Left hand drive Right hand drive Fluid drive

Wheel and axle Two wheeler Three wheeler Four wheeler Six wheeler

Suspension system Conventional-leaf spring Independent-coil spring, torsion bar, pneumatic

Body and number of door Sedan-two door and four door types Convertible-jeep Station wagon Delivery van pick ups Special purpose vehicle-ambulance, mobile hospital etc

Transmission Conventional- All I ndian vehicle Semi-automatic-most of British and American vehicle Automatic- Most of American vehicle

Parts of an automobile 1. machine portion 2. carriage portion

Machine portion Chassis and transmission Engine Electrical equipment

Chassis and transmission It support engine and transmission system Chassis include 1.frame 2. spring and shock absorber 3. steering system 4. brakes

transmission It transmit power from engine to wheel It consists of the following 1. clutch 2. gear box 3. universal joint 4.final drive 5.axle and differential

Engine 1.Full system-this system mixes petrol with air in the right proportion to give a mixture which when burn provides a pressure. The pressure is used to move a piston. 2.Ignition system-this system of the engine provides regular spark to set fire to the mixture coming from the fuel system 3. lubricating system-this system lubricates the moving parts of the engine so that they can move smoothly 4. cooling system-this system with the help of water cools the engine and prevents it from getting hot.

Electrical system -battery -dynamo -alternator

Body and carriage portion It is that portion of an automobile where passenger have their seat or where the cargo to be carried is placed.

Description of an automobile The following factor should be taken into consideration while writing down the description 1.type-bus, truck etc 2. Capacity- Carriage capacity 5 ton , 3 ton 4 seater , 6 seater,30 seater etc Make-actual name alloted by the manufacturer such as capacity HP of the engine maruti 800 have 800 cc Drive-4 wheel drive, 6 wheel drive Model-0year of manufacturer

Performance of an automobile When the fuel burns in the cylinder pressure are developed, these pressure are transmitted to the crankshaft by the piston and connecting rod and torque is produced which set to crankshaft in motion the torque produced by the engine is transmitted through the drive line to the wheels to propel the vehicle. The actual power delivered by the engine is known as brake power=2 pi nt /60x1000 kw
