DEFINITION
1.COMMUNITY:
According WHO Expert committee,” A community is
a social group determined by geographic boundaries
and/or common values and interests. The members
know and interact with each other. It function within a
particular social structure and exhibits and creates
certain norms, values and social institutions. The
individual belongs to the broader society through his
family and community.”
2. Community health:
The expert committee of WHO has defined
community health has, “In totality, community health
means the state of health of the members of the
community , problems affecting their health and health
care available in the community.”
3. Community treatment:
“Community treatment refers to the steps
taken in accordance with desire of the public and
the
available resources to solve those health problems
of
the community which were ascertained through
community diagnosis.”
Important constituents responsible for the health

1. Individual
Every individual take care of his own health.
He should adapt all those steps which are essential
for maintaining good health. This is called self care.
Some activities of self care are;
following the common behavior rules related to
food, exercise and sleep etc.
Avoiding smoking, drinking and drug addiction.
Avoiding unhealthy habits and lifestyle.
Immunization, regular health check up and early
treatment of disease.
Following measures essential for protecting
others from disease.
2. Community
Cooperation of community is essential
for the preservation of health. The important
activities of community participation;
Manpower, facilities, moral agreement &
funds are made available by the community
for health activities.
Taking active participation by community in
planning, implementation, management &
evaluation of health programmes.

Health is an important issue for
every public welfare state. Community
health &
welfare is the responsibility of national
government.

Cooperation among nation is
essential for the better health of their people.
WHO & other health institutions are
shouldering this responsibilities& are
continuously working to achieve these goals.
Community health nursing
Definition
According to Hafden Mailer (1985)
former director of WHO ,” basic element of
community health nursing is expansion of
community health & faith of patients in nurses.”

Main goal:
Help the individuals, families, & community in
attaining highest standard of health by means of
prevention of illness and promotion of health.
Other goal:
Increase the life expectancy
To decrease the IMR, MMR & other morbidities
To prevent disabilities, providing rehabilitation

Principles of nursing
1.Health services should be based on the health needs
of individuals & the community. Health programmes
should be concerned with the solution of the health
problems & the resources available. Nurse should
have good knowledge about community. So that the
immediate problems of the individual can be solved
effectively.
2.Health services should be suitable to the budget;
workers & the resources.

3.Family should be recognized as a unit & the health
services should be provided to its members. Active
participation of family should be acquired in the
health services.
4. Health services should be available to all without
any discrimination of age, sex, caste, religion &
social/ economic level.
5.Health education is an important part of community
health nursing. It should be pre-planned, suitable to
conditions, scientifically true & effective.

continuously, without any interruption. Taking
care of the follow-up treatment is also necessary.
7. Preparation & maintenance of records & reports is
very important in community health nursing.
8. The nurses & other health workers

9.Effective team spirit is a must in the team
working for community health.
10.Arrangements should be made for the
timely evaluation of the services provided
