Figures of Speech A literary device which takes place when the words used carry meanings beyond its literal one.

SIMILE A comparison of two objects using the words “as” or “like” .

SIMILE Ana is like a skunk when she stinks. Two objects being compared likeness key word Ana smells really bad when gets sweat.

METAPHOR A direct comparison of two objects without using the words “as” or “like”.

METAPHOR Jana has a heart of stone. Two objects being compared Jana is a very reserved and cold person.

PERSONIFICATION It is used to put human actions to an inanimate objects .

PERSONIFICATION The wind whispers into my ears. Non-living thing Human action The wind is too soft and calming.

HYPERBOLE Used in an exaggerated form to emphasize something .

HYPERBOLE “I can wait for you even it takes a thousand years.” Exaggerated expression The person is willing to wait no matter how long it takes. Sana all! Char XD

ONOMATOPOEIA A word that sounds like what it is describing.

ONOMATOPOEIA “I felt the swosh of the wind touching my skin.” Sound of the wind

OXYMORON Appears when two contradicting words put together in the sentence .

OXYMORON “I came across the living dead in the hallway.” Contradicting word Contradicting word The person encountered a zombie in the hallway.

IRONY It is visible when there is a contrast between what is said and what is meant , or between appearance and reality.
