What is a flowchart? A flowchart is a type of diagram that represents an algorithm, workflow or process, showing the steps as boxes of various kinds, and their order by connecting them with arrows. This diagrammatic representation illustrates a solution model to a given problem. Flowcharts are used in analyzing, designing, documenting or managing a process or program in various fields. There are different kinds of flow charts: Document flowcharts , showing controls over a document-flow through a system Data flowcharts , showing controls over a data-flow in a system System flowcharts showing controls at a physical or resource level Program flowchart , showing the controls in a program within a system

Flow Chart Construction Clearly define process boundaries Identify start and end points Clearly define each step in the process Be accurate and honest Identify and include the right people Decide on the level of detail BASIC STEPS FOR CONSTRUCTING A FLOW CHART Define the process to be diagramed Brainstorm the activities that take place Arrange the activities in proper sequence Draw arrows to show the flow Review the flow chart with others involved in the process

Types of Flow Charts Macro Flow Chart -Shows only the major steps of the process Top-Down Flow Chart -Shows the major steps of a process and the first layer of sub-steps Detailed Flow Chart (Micro flowchart) -Shows all details necessary to capture exactly how a process is done
