Internet
•Internet can be defined as International network
of computers, i.e. across the globe.
•It is a network of networks i.e. it can be taken as a
network which connects networks across the world.
•Internet is nothing but a network of LAN’s using
WAN’s.
•Internet connects all open systems which are
unrestricted for connectivity, so that they will be
able to inter operate, share data, share resources,
etc.

ISP (Internet Service Provider)
•Internet Service Provider also known as Internet Access
Provider is an organization or a company which provides the
Internet Access to various users.
•ISP can also offer value added services like providing Video
Conferencing, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), etc.
ISP in India
• Government organisation - VSNL, ERNET, BSNL, NICNET
• Private organisations - Satyam Online, Dishnet, HCL, Webduniya,
Reliance, Tata, MTS, etc

Type of Internet Connections
•Dial-up : : Dial-up connection enable user to have accounts on the
internet access providers computers. A user can dial ISP by using
modem through telephone line to gain access to internet.
i. Shell ii. TCP/IP
•ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) : is a high-
speed, fully digital telephone service. Just as compact discs have
made recorded musical digital; ISDN upgrades today’s analog
telephone network to a digital system. ISDN can operate at speeds
up to 128 kilobits/second, which is five or more times faster than
dial-up analog modems
•Broadband : The term broadband refers to a telecommunications
signal of greater bandwidth. The Broadband service will be available
on DSL technology (on the same copper cable that is used for
connecting telephone).
•Leased Line : It is sometimes known as a 'Private Circuit' or 'Data
Line‘.

WWW (World Wide Web)
•World Wide Web (WWW) or the Web is
repository of information spread all over the world
and linked together.
•In this, information is stored in a set of
documents, these documents are linked together.
•A reader who browses through a document can
move to other documents by clicking the items
that are linked to other documents.
•Tim Berners-Lee, of Switzerland, developed the
concept of WWW in 1989.

Web Page and Website

The web page is a electronic sheet on net.
•It is a single file of a web site.
•Softwares for Website Quicksite, Microsoft
Frontpage, , Macromedia Dreamviewer, etc.
•Languages : HTML language or other languages
like Java, , .NET, Coldfusion, etc.
•Web site is a collection of Web pages that are
linked with each other to form one single body
of information.
•Web pages are collectively stored on at specific
locations or net which is known as Web server.
•Portal
•Search Engine : are websites which search data or
sites from Internet Ex. www.googl.com, www.altavista.com,

Internet Terminologies
•HyperLink : Represent differnet location in
current location.
•URL (Uniform Resource Locator) : It is website
address with link
•Domain Name : is Web Address Browser :
Software for accessing Internet
(Ex. Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator,
Mozila Firefox, Google Corme, Opera.)
•Domain Code :
.com - commercial , .biz - business
.in - india (country ) .net - network provider
.info - informational .org -organsiation
.edu - educational
.gov - government agency .mil - military organization

E-Mail

•It is a plain-text messaging system.
•E-mail account is must for sending and receiving E-mail

•C2C
E-Business
•Electronic business, commonly referred to as
"eBusiness" or "e-business", may be defined as
the utilization of information and
communication technologies (ICT) in support of
all the activities of business.

E-Learning
•E-learning comprises all forms of electronically
supported learning and teaching. The
Information and communication systems,
whether networked or not, serve as specific
media to implement the learning process.
•LMS (Learning Management System)
•CBT (Computer Based Training)
E-Governance
•Creating a comfortable, transparent, and cheap
interaction between government and citizens
Examples

EDI
•The term Data refers to collection of facts
made up of numbers, characters and symbols
stored on computer in standard format known
as document.

patterns from data
Data Warehousing

organization's electronically stored data. Data
warehouses are designed to facilitate reporting
and analysis

Neural Network
•Artificial neural networks are made up of
interconnecting artificial neurons (programming
constructs that mimic the properties of
biological neurons).
•It is used to gain an understanding of biological
neural networks or for solving artificial
intelligence problems

MANET (Mobile Adhoc Network)
•A mobile ad hoc network (MANET), sometimes
called a mobile mesh network, is a self-
configuring network of mobile devices
connected by wireless links.
•Each device in a MANET is free to move
independently in any direction, and will
therefore change its links to other devices
frequently.
•Such networks may operate by themselves or
may be connected to the larger Internet.
•MANETs are a kind of wireless ad hoc networks
that usually has a routeable networking
environment
