INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT (IPM) OF COTTON By:- Jyotiraditya Krushna Rajput
Monitoring for Pest & Disease Community-level monitoring for pest distribution. Pest assessment every 10 days. Record incidence at 12 spots/ha (5 plants/spot). Use pheromone traps (5/ha) for bollworms & spodoptera . Use yellow sticky traps (25/ha) for whitefly. Monitor sucking pests and apply botanicals if needed. Release egg parasitoids & predators based on trap data.
Pheromone traps Yellow sticky traps
Pre-sowing Stage Deep ploughing in summer. Remove alternate hosts & residues. Avoid cotton after cotton (crop rotation). Soybean, cowpea. Acid delinting + fumigation of seeds before sowing.
Sowing Date & Cultural Practices Use resistant varieties & certified seeds. Seed treatment with insecticides/antibiotics. Early sowing, proper spacing, and weed-free management. Balanced fertilizer and water use; FYM @ 25 t/ha. Trap cropping with okra, castor, marigold, Nicotiana rustica . Intercropping with legumes and onion reduces pest/disease pressure.
Vegetative Stage Gap filling and thinning. Manual weeding & interculture . Monitor trap crops and intercrops. Release Chrysoperla grubs (1000/ha). Spray neem products for whitefly. Pheromone traps & sticky traps in place. Remove root rot affected plants.
Fruiting Stage Collect and destroy infested flowers and larvae. Use Ha.NPV (250–500 LE/ha). in evening. Spray Neem products . Spray recommended insecticides.
Boll Opening Stage Apply insecticides only when needed. Do not prolong crop period. Spot application for mites. Destroy CLCV infected plants.
Storage & Post-Harvest Terminate crop early; avoid ratooning. Grazing to destroy residues. Burn gin trash and stalks . Crush seeds by April end. Fumigate seeds under expert supervision.
