2. OVERVIEW
•Pharmacists and pharmaceutical assistants must be
registered with the PSI (Pharmaceutical Society of
Ireland) in order to practice in Ireland.
•Anyone wishing to practice as a pharmacist in Ireland
must first register with the PSI. PSI must be satisfied that
the requirements set for a pharmacist to register are
met. This registration must then be renewed on an
annual basis.

4. QUALIFICATION RECOGNITION
To make a valid application for recognition of your qualification as a pharmacist from Pakistan, you are required
to:
•Complete theapplication form

•Complete the statutory declaration form

5. EQUIVALENCE EXAM
If you have successfully completed Stage 1 of the TCQR (Third Country Qualification Registration) process you are
eligible to apply to sit an Equivalence Exam. You must be in receipt of a confirmation of eligibility letter from the PSI
to be eligible to apply to sit the exam.
The Equivalence Exam includes an exam and OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) assessment designed
to assist the PSI Council in assessing the standard of training, education, examination and qualification of applicants
so as to determine whether an applicant holds a qualification which is of a standard not lower than the standard
necessary for practice in Ireland.

6. ADAPTATION PERIOD
This stage consists of an adaptation period to ensure that you gain the competencies required to practise safely as
an independent and professional pharmacist and gain the knowledge and skills required to exercise the
independent legal, professional and ethical responsibilities of a pharmacist in Ireland.
You may be required to carry out training for a minimum period of at least six months under the supervision of a
tutor pharmacist. Tutor pharmacists are required to assess your performance during your adaptation placement.
The Adaptation Period can only be undertaken in a hospital or community pharmacy setting and must be carried
out under the supervision of an approved tutor pharmacist at an approved training establishment.
If during the adaptation period you have not performed to the required standard and competencies, then a further
period of training may be required.

7. PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION EXAMINATION
If you successfully complete the adaptation period, you will then be eligible to undertake a Professional Registration
Examination (PRE). This exam will assess and confirm that you possess the knowledge, skills and competencies
appropriate for practice as a pharmacist in Ireland.
Applicants must pass the PRE within 3 years of successfully completing the adaptation period or from the date of
notification that no period of adaptation is necessary. The PRE is currently outsourced and facilitated by a third-
party provider who determine the dates of the exam each year. There are usually two sittings per year.
Details on applying to sit this examination will be provided to eligible applicants in advance of any PRE and they will
be required to formally apply to confirm their place on any exam.
Following receipt of the application form, applicants’ details will be provided to the exam provider who will
subsequently contact all eligible applicants with further information, logistics etc in advance of the exam.

8. LANGUAGE COMPETENCE
Assessment of language competence is required to be submitted when making an application for registration.
On submission of an application for registration, applicants must prove that they have achieved a standard of
competence in the English languageby complying with one of the three criteria recognised by the PSI Council as
being satisfactory to assure language competence.
Provision of evidence of language competence is not required to be provided under the qualification recognition
process.

10. SCOPE
Hospital pharmacy jobs are in great demand in Ireland! More pharmacies are cropping up in Ireland as a
whole. Plus, community pharmacies are losing a substantial portion of their staff.
Hospital pharmacists also enjoy a higher pay scale than other pharmacist positions.

11. IMMIGRATION
As a student in any masters program, then after
completing masters, complete the requirements and apply
for registration as pharmacist.
As an intern or pharmacy assistant, apply for visa and
complete your documentation during that time frame.
