Vocabulary Regular verb : A regular verb is one that forms its simple past tense and its past participle by adding "-ed" or "-d" to the base form of the verb. Examples: 3

Vocabulary Irregular verb : A verb that does not form its simple past tense or its past participle by adding "-ed" or "-d" to the base form. Irregular verbs change their form. Examples: think thought (have) thought simple present simple past past participle 4

Vocabulary 1. Simple Past : a verb tense that describes an action completed in the past. Examples: Moira planned the trip. He bought a new shirt. I helped my friend. 5

Vocabulary 2. Past Participle : a past form of a verb that can be used with "have/has/had" to form the perfect tenses (which describe events occurring in the past that are connected to a later time, usually the present). Examples: Moira had planned the trip. He has bought a new shirt. I have helped my friend. 6

Simple Past and Present/Past Perfect: Simple Past: I ate dinner . Perfect Tenses: I have eaten dinner. ( present perfect) At 7:00 pm, I had eaten dinner. ( past perfect) +____________________+_____________________+____________ dinner 7:00 pm NOW (8:00pm) 7

Examples: The “ be ” verb The “be” verb is the most common irregular verb in English. Simple Present I am a teacher. Simple Past : I was a teacher. Past Participle : I have been a teacher for 5 years. 11

A note on have/had: The verb “have/had” can be used alone: I have 2 dogs. I had a wonderful time at the concert. Have/had is also used to form the past participle. We can use both of these together (although it sounds a little awkward): I have had a bad meal here before. I had had a bad meal here before we decided to eat somewhere else.
