ITDC came into existence in October 1966 and has been the prime mover in the progressive development, promotion and expansion of tourism in the country.The Corporation is running hotels, restaurants at various places for tourists, besides providing transport facilities. Presently, ITDC has a network of eight Ashok Group of Hotels, six Joint Venture Hotels, 2 Restaurants (including one Airport Restaurant), 12 Transport Units, one Tourist Service Station, 37 Duty Free Shops at International as well as Domestic Customs Airports, one Tax Free outlet and two Sound & Light Shows. Besides, ITDC is also managing a hotel at Bharatpur and a restaurant at Kosi on behalf of the Department of Tourism. In addition, it is also managing catering services at Western Court, Vigyan Bhawan, Hyderabad House and National Media Press Centre at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi.

INTRODUCTION In 1966 Government decided to merge three public sectors tourism bodies into one complete corporation with the objective of securing coordination in tourism planning and in the policy. Those three corporations were:- Hotel Corporation of India Limited, India Tourism Corporation Limited , India Tourism Transport Undertaking. In October, 1966 Government established India Tourism Development Corporation ( ITDC) under the provision of companies act 1956 with an authorized capital of five crores the capital was financed by the Central Government. It is the prime mover in the development , promotion and expansion of Tourism in India.

4. Objectives of ITDC To develop tourism infrastructure. The construction, management and marketing of tourism products including hotels and catering units. Establishment and management of tourist transport. The setting up of shopping facilities and to provide duty free and tax free shops.

5. Creating convention and conferencing facilities . Providing consultancy services and training for tourism related project . Promote tourism traffic in the country through food, festivals, fairs and joint ventures abroad. Organize cultural and entertainment programs . Provide publicity abroad.

7. Ashok Group of Hotels :- The Ashok chain is the largest hotel chain in public sector undertaking. Originally it was providing accommodation at those place where the private sector afraid to invest in the lodging sector. Now it runs hotels all over the country. ITDC hotels industry ranges from Five Star to lodge. It has thirty-eight properties at twenty-eight permanent tourist places. These properties are divided into elite, classic and comfort hotels as ‘ Samrat ’ in New Delhi, Kaniska in New Delhi, Ashok in Jaipur .

13. Duty and Tax Free Shops (Shopping division). ITDC is the pioneer of Duty free Business in India. With the changing times, they have also changed our business focus from operating Duty free shops only at the International Airports to expanding it to other locations such as Seaports etc. Currently they have Duty Free Shops at Coimbatore International Airport. They are also present at Chennai, Haldia, Kolkata, Goa, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Mangalore and Mumbai seaports. These shops have World’s best-known Spirits, wines and top selling brands of cigarettes and made in India products like handicrafts etc. as well as a large assortment of teas at most competitive prices.

14. Engineering and Consultancy ITDC Provides unique consultancy services to develop camping tourism and adventure tourism. The corporation has already run successfully tourist camps at Narwar , Jaisalmer , Bir (HP),Daman and Diu, Andamans and Coorg (Karnataka) It provides Engineering consultancy services in the field of civil , structure, plumbing, air-conditioning and mechanical disciplines. It provides Architectural interior designing, Designing of industrial kitchen, including preparation of layouts and kitchen equipment.

15. Catering Unit ITDC provides catering operations in Vigyan Bhawan and Hyderabad House. ITDC has been successfully handling the management controls, which includes catering and upkeep services of Hyderabad House (Which comes under the jurisdiction of Ministry of External Affaires) . ITDC has an exclusive VVIP catering unit, operational since last 30 years. It is catering successfully to many international and national events attended by heads of states of various countries like-NAM,CHOGM,UNIDO conference,G15 summit etc.

17. Sound and Light Show :- ITDC organised sound and light show in Purana Quila and Red Fort in New Delhi. This is a 1 hour audio video showcasing history of Delhi and Red Fort. Purana Quila , New Delhi (Friday Closed. Adult - Rs.100/-, Child - Rs.50/-. No Cancellation. Entry free for defence personnel and their family members. Red Fort , New Delhi (This show is on Weekends, (Monday Closed). Adult - Rs.80/-, Child - Rs.30/- No cancellation.   Entry free for defence personnel and their family members.

19. Event Management ITDC Event and Entertainment provides a complete corporate events services. It provides each and every services from the scratch to the top of the World, which includes corporate events, seminars, product launching party, New year parties, fashion shows and star nights. They are quite comfortable in providing you with a suitable venue for your event, to manage the booking of the venue and all the servicing from bar manage men, catering, ticketing, manage the booking and the host and hostess for the welcome. Role of ITDC in Tourism and Travel Trade There is no doubt that ITDC is at the four front of Indian Tourism which elaborate infrastructure of hotels, beach resorts, travel agencies, car rental services ,convention and conference facility across of the country. During the recent years, the corporation has entered into the joint venture agreement with several State Govts . To set up mid market over budget hotel. It has also offered tour packages in collaboration with Air India, State Tourism Corporation and Indian Railways as “ Enjoy India” for domestic tourist and “ Discover India” for Pilgrim tours and Buddhist tours etc.

ITDC bags 3 awards at Hospitality India Explore the world 12th Annual International Travel Awards.
