What’s a cognate? Read the following text. Identify the words that can be considered cognates between English and Spanish. A few Latin American people have gained so much recognition in the field of arts such as Frida Kahlo. She is identified not just because of her paintings, but also because she established a path for women to become peers with male artists at her time. Her work has lots of insights on her personal life stories, but also on the reality that women had to go through in a region that has been traditionally considered a male chauvinistic one, or as the English language borrowed from Spanish, a region full of machismo. A set of words between two languages with a similar form and a similar meaning is called a cognate.
What’s a cognate? Most victims of the Colombian armed conflict have been either campesinos or community leaders who the security forces have falsely claimed were guerrillas killed in combat. The victim is typically taken from their home or place of work in front of witnesses and taken to another location to be killed. The body is presented wearing army fatigues by the security forces, although witnesses testify that the victim had been wearing civilian clothes when detained. Many of the victims are buried as unidentified individuals despite being identified by family members. The bodies also often show signs of torture. A set of words between two languages with a similar form and a similar meaning is called a cognate.
What’s a false cognate? Read the following sentences. Identify the false cognates. Think about a different way to say the same idea in English. I want to introduce you to my friend. The actual price for the product is higher. I cannot assist you with that procedure. Sometimes students didn’t attend the class because of connectivity issues. Most people here study different majors. The mayor promised to do some things she hasn’t done yet. I just realized I don’t have clean clothes for tomorrow. Some fabrics are not good for making clothes. Some people’s careers might be different from their majors. A set of words between two languages with a similar form but a different meaning is called a false cognate . Sometimes they are called false friends.
Phrasal Verbs: The Story of Romulus and Remus Read the following ideas. Identify the phrasal verbs in each statement. Can you paraphrase the sentences here? People say that a wolf looked after Romulus and Remus and fed them with her milk. However, a shepherd brought them up after he came across with them. When these kids grew up, they started the town of Rome.
Phrasal Verbs: The Story of Mowgli Read the following ideas. Identify the phrasal verbs in each statement. Can you paraphrase the sentences here? In the Jungle Book, Mowgli was brought up by animals. Mowgli looked up to animals, not to humans. Eventually, Mowgli integrated with humans, and he started picking up their language at last.
What’s a phrasal verb? Read the meaning of each phrasal verb. Decide which verb goes in each blank space. 1. to change from child to adult ______________ 2. to learn without trying _________________ 3. to take care of ____________________ 4. to raise/educate children _________________ 5. to find by chance ___________________ 6. to respect ________________________ A phrasal verb is a combination of words (a verb + preposition(s) or a verb + an adverb) that when used together, usually takes on a different meaning of that of the original verb.
Actual meaning of these phrasal verbs Did you know the meaning of these verbs? What other phrasal verbs do you know? 1. to change from child to adult: grow up 2. to learn without trying: pick up 3. to take care of: look after 4. to raise/educate children: bring up 5. to find by chance: come across 6. to respect: look up to The phrasal verbs here talk about family life. There are other phrasal verbs you can use on your everyday life.
Using phrasal verbs in context Ask and answer the following questions with a partner. Try to use only English during this interaction. Where did you grow up? Have you ever picked up words in another language? Have you ever looked after a newborn baby, or a very old person? What do you think of grandparents bringing up children? Have you ever come across money in the street? Who do you look up to the most?
What’s an idiom? An idiom is an expression that cannot be understood from the meanings of its separate words but that has a separate meaning of its own. (Merriam-Webster) Idioms happen in all languages, including Spanish. For example, the Colombian expressions dar papaya or mamar gallo can be understood as idioms. If you want to present the first idea in English you would need to say “give someone the chance to take advantage of you”. The second idea could be translated as “make fun of something/someone”.
Let’s check some common idioms! Don't give up your day job You hit the nail on the head Look before you leap Slow and steady wins the race The devil is in the details There's no such thing as a free lunch You can't judge a book by its cover Get your act together We'll cross that bridge when we come to it Work better or leave Reliability is more important than speed It looks good from a distance, but when you look closer, there are problems Take only calculated risks Let's not talk about that problem right now Get something exactly right You're not very good at this Nothing is entirely free This person or thing may look bad, but it's good inside
What idiom would use to talk about each situation? Someone invites you to invest some money so you can double it within three months. You’re trying to figure out the solution to a problem when suddenly a friend comes and gives it to you. A colleague presents a project that looks interesting, but you are not completely convinced about some ideas he/she included. A student comes to the first class and he/she looks both scruffy and uninterested. Your boss insists on checking some final details for a project when you haven’t even started it. You receive an invitation for a meal from a tourism agency, and you don’t have to pay for it. You’re working in a group, but your teammate keeps making basic mistakes that affect the outcome of your project. A friend tells you about a diet in order to lose weight fast. You doubt about it.
