Jack White’s Early Life

First years Born as John Anthony Gillis, in Detroit, Michigan, Jack White was the youngest of ten children. He was playing drums at the age of 6 and by his teens, he had a great appreciation for the blues and 1960’s rock that influenced the rest of his music.

Starting to play At 15, White worked under an upholstery apprenticeship with a family friend who then exposed him to punk music and play in a band.

Beginnings of Third Man After his upholstery apprenticeship, White went on to open his own one man upholstery business, Third Man Upholstery. Everything in the business had a yellow, black, and white color scheme which later shows up in the red, black, and white color scheme of the White Stripes.

Beginning of performing After the flop of his business for being “unprofessional” White started to play his own gigs with small acts like “Goober & The Peas” and other local bands.
