Grace A. Ogot Ogot was born Grace Emily Akinyi to a Christian family on 15 May 1930 in Asembo , in the district of Nyanza, Kenya – a village highly populated by the predominantly Christian Luo ethnic group. Her father, Joseph Nyanduga , was one of the first men in the village of Asembo to obtain a Western education.

Summary (Short Story) In a village, it had not rained for a long time. The land was parched, the cattle were dying, and soon the adults and children would be without water. The main story begins when the great chief, Labong’o comes back from the medicine man’s house. Labong’o was told that the ancestors had chosen his only and treasure daughter, Oganda , will be the sacrifice to the lake monster so that rain would come. His heart was totally broken, but he had no any other choices as he was a chief of a village. The rising action was when Labong’O declared that Oganda would be the sacrifice. Oganda felt very sad, frightened, and disappointed, but the villagers seemed to rejoice with that announcement. They would dance till the morning. In the morning, they prepared a big farewell feast for her before she went on the journey to the lake. It meant Oganda went to die for the whole community. They gave farewell speeches and saw her for the last time. When Oganda was goes to the lake she is very terrified as she thinks that she has been followed by the lake monster. She ran with all her strength and finally fainted. In the falling action, her lover, Osinda appears and comes to protect and save Oganda . They escaped from the eyes of their ancestors and the wrath of the monster to an unknown land. The resolution is black clouds started to gather, the thunder roared, and the rain came down in torrents as it had not done for a long time.
