Jeremy Casson - Giving Back in
the Local Community
There are many different ways people can make a valuable contribution to their local community, even if they aren't sure
how to make the most of their skills and experience. It can seem too difficult to find the time to give back, but as art
conservator Jeremy Casson knows, there are plenty of opportunities for people to make small but valuable differences.
Residents may already be doing some of these things without even realising, making an important difference to the lives of
everyone in the community.

Finding a Valuable Use
for Each Skillset
Skill Sharing
Giving the local community
access to your skills can be
rewarding and support others
to build their confidence.
Mentoring
Becoming a mentor can be
an excellent way to enable
others to overcome their own
challenges. While mentoring
can be done with people of
any age, it can be especially
fulfilling to guide a child or
young person.
Mentorship Programmes
With a variety of organisations around the country that facilitate
mentorship programmes — such as Big Brothers and Sisters, and
YMCA — those who are interested in becoming a mentor have
many different options at their disposal.

Volunteering
Opportunities
1
Food Banks
Food banks always
appreciate additional help
from volunteers.
2
Hospitals
Hospitals are in constant
need of volunteers to
support their operations.
3
Animal Shelters
Animal lovers may wish to
look into their local animal
shelters for volunteering
opportunities.
4
Schools and Youth
Centres
Schools and youth centres
are ideal for those who
enjoy spending time with
children and young people.

Small Changes That
Make a Difference
1
Environmental Care
Doing something simple — such as taking a rubbish bag
on a walk to pick up litter — helps to improve the local
environment and can be done simply and easily.
2
Shopping Locally
It's also important to evaluate shopping habits; instead
of opting to shop at big chains, choosing to shop with
locally owned businesses saves the customer time and
money, as well as helping to circulate money back into
the local community.
3
Civic Engagement
Residents should also endeavour to vote in local
elections and connect with local councillors.

Engaging with Local
Officials
1
Write Letters
Writing letters to officials to highlight local issues is an
important way to engage with local government.
2
Offer Encouragement
Offering encouragement in meeting residents' needs is a
positive way to communicate with elected officials.
3
Build Relationships
Facilitating a good relationship between elected
councillors and the people they represent strengthens the
community.

The Importance of Giving Blood
High Demand
One of the most valuable ways to
give back is by giving blood. With a
huge demand on the NHS to meet
the needs of patients, blood drives
are essential.
Life-Saving Impact
Every donation of blood can save up
to three lives and make a significant
difference to those in need.
Ongoing Need
Regular blood donations are crucial
to maintain a stable supply for
medical treatments and emergencies.

Recognising Everyday
Contributions
Helping Neighbours
Small acts of kindness towards neighbours can make a big difference in
building a strong community.
Recycling
Consistent recycling efforts contribute to a cleaner and more
sustainable local environment.
Emotional Support
Offering emotional support to friends and family is an often overlooked
but crucial way of giving back.
