Learning Objectives: 1. Explain the historical and biblical foundations of the Jubilee Year , including its significance in the life of the Church and its connection to God's mercy and renewal. 2. Identify the key themes and spiritual practices associated with the Jubilee Year 2025 , such as pilgrimage, indulgences, reconciliation, and acts of charity. 3. Reflect on how the Jubilee Year 2025 can inspire personal and communal transformation, and propose concrete ways to participate in its celebrations and mission.

What is the Jubilee? “Jubilee” is the name given to a particular year; the name comes from the instrument used to mark its launch. In this case, the instrument in question is the yobel , the ram's horn, used to proclaim the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). This (Jewish) holiday occurs every year, but it takes on special significance when it marks the beginning of a Jubilee year. The term "Yobel" (also spelled Yovel in Hebrew: יוֹבֵל) is directly associated with the concept of Jubilee because it is the Hebrew word for "Jubilee" in the Old Testament.

Biblical Origin of Yobel (Jubilee) In Leviticus 25:8-13 , God commanded the Israelites to observe a Jubilee Year (Yobel Year) every 50th year . The word Yobel is believed to be derived from the Hebrew term for a ram’s horn (shofar) , which was blown to announce the beginning of the Jubilee year. The Jubilee Year was a sacred time of liberation and restoration , including: Freedom for slaves (enslaved Hebrews were set free). Return of property (land that had been sold was returned to its original owners). Rest for the land (no sowing or harvesting, similar to the Sabbath year)

In 1300, Pope Boniface VIII called the first Jubilee, also known as a“Holy Year,” since it is a time in which God's holiness transforms us. The frequency of Holy Years has changed over time: at first, they were celebrated every 100 years; later, in 1343 Pope Clement VI reduced the gap between Jubilees to every 50 years, and in 1470 Pope Paul II made it every 25 years. There have also been “extraordinary” Holy Years: for example, in 1933 Pope Pius XI chose to commemorate the 1900th anniversary of the Redemption, and in 2015 Pope Francis proclaimed the Year of Mercy as an extraordinary jubilee.

Characteristics of the jubilee 1. Pilgrimage The jubilee calls for us to set out on a journey and to cross boundaries. When we travel, we do not only change place physically, but we also change ourselves. Pilgrimage is an experience of conversion, of transforming one's very being to conform it to the holiness of God. During the pilgrimage, one also shares in the experience of those who, for various reasons, are forced to leave their homelands to seek a better life for themselves and their family.

2. Holy Door From a symbolic viewpoint, the Holy Door takes on a special significance: it is the most powerful sign of the Jubilee, since the ultimate aim of the pilgrim is to pass through it. The opening of the door by the Pope constitutes the official beginning of the Holy Year. In crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, the pilgrim is reminded of the passage from chapter 10 of St John’s gospel: “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” Passing through the Holy Door expresses the decision to follow and be guided by Jesus, who is the Good Shepherd. Characteristics of the jubilee

3. Reconciliation In practical terms, reconciliation involves receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation, taking advantage of this time to rediscover the value of confession, and experiencing God's personal words of forgiveness. There are some Jubilee churches that stay open continuously to make available the sacrament of Reconciliation. You can prepare yourself to receive the sacrament by following a guide. Characteristics of the jubilee

4. Prayer There are many reasons and ways to pray, but at the root of prayer is always the desire to be open to God's presence and His offer of love. The prayer opportunities on the journey show that the pilgrim holds the path to God “in his heart” (Psalm 83:6). Characteristics of the jubilee

5. Liturgy The liturgy is the public prayer of the Church: in the words of the Second Vatican Council, it is the “summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; [and,] at the same time it is the font from which all her power flows.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 10). Characteristics of the jubilee

6. Profession of Faith The profession of faith – also known as the ‘Symbol’ - is a sign of the identity of the baptized person. “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved,” (Romans 10:9-10). “To say the Creed with faith is to enter into communion with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and also with the whole Church which transmits the faith to us and in whose midst, we believe” (CCC 197). Characteristics of the jubilee

7. Indulgences The Jubilee Indulgence is a concrete manifestation of God's mercy, which goes beyond and transforms the boundaries of human justice. This treasury of grace entered human history in the witness of Jesus and the saints, and by living in communion with them our hope for our own forgiveness is strengthened and becomes a certainty. The Jubilee indulgence allows us to free our hearts from the weight of sin because the reparation due for our sins is given freely and abundantly. In practical terms, the experience of God’s mercy involves some spiritual acts indicated by the Pope. Those who cannot make the Jubilee pilgrimage due to illness or other circumstances are nonetheless invited to take part in the spiritual movement that accompanies the Jubilee year, offering up the sufferings of their daily lives, and participating in the Eucharistic celebration. Characteristics of the jubilee

Characteristics of the jubilee

Characteristics of the jubilee

8. Charity Charity is a principal characteristic of the Christian life. No one can think that pilgrimage and the celebration of the indulgence of the Jubilee can be reduced to a form of magical ritual, without knowing that it is a life of charity that gives them ultimate meaning. "Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins" (1 Pet. 4:8). Characteristics of the jubilee

The Church has a Holy Year of Jubilee every 25 years (the last one was in 2000) The Year of Mercy (2016) was an Extraordinary Jubilee – a bonus Holy Year! The Jubilee Year begun on December 24 th 2024 and run until Tuesday 6 January 2026 Pope Francis wants us to prepare for this by undertaking a year of prayer with a particular emphasis on The Lord’s Prayer.

Year of Prayer began on Sunday 3 December 2023 during Advent. It is to be a year for prayer, rather than about prayer during which we will be encouraged to deepen our own prayer life and love of God and to accompany others in theirs

The four figures represent ‘all of humanity’, coming from the four corners of the earth. They embrace each other to indicate the solidarity and fraternity which should unite all peoples. The figures also remind us that we do not journey through life alone and that we are united with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

The figure at the front is embracing the cross. The symbolism of this is twofold. The cross is a well-known sign of faith and it is also a sign of hope: we need to hold onto our faith ‘especially in our moments of greatest need.’

There are waves beneath the figures. This reminds us that our pilgrim’s journey through life is not always calm and smooth: throughout our lives we will have to face all kinds of different challenges.

The symbol of hope is further enhanced by the lower part of the cross which is in the shape of an anchor. It is submerged deep into the waters and signifies how, like an anchor, our faith gives us stability and security.

In this logo the cross is also bending ‘down towards humanity, not leaving human beings alone, but stretching out to them to offer the certainty of its presence and the security of hope.’

The motto ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ is ahead of the boat in the direction of travel. Green is a colour of growth and hope. At Easter time we see the signs of spring emerging from the earth coinciding with our celebration of the Resurrection through which our hope and salvation is realised.

Midterm Task #1 What is the significance of the Jubilee Year in the life of the Church and in your personal faith journey? How can you actively participate in its spiritual and charitable aspects?
