Assessing
Railway
Efficiency in
Chennai:A Survey-
Based Study
The railway in Chennai is one of the well-established ones with
corresponding amenity of metro and suburban trains.
Prelude Railway services definitely serve the interests of promoting
economic activities, unlock traffic congestion, and provide mobility
within urban settings. This particular study endeavors to assess the
railway system of Chennai, on its efficiency, through a survey that
seeks passenger feedback.
The major factors surveyed are punctuality, safety, comfort,
frequency, cost, and general service quality.
Introduction
Methodology
Some one thousand train travelers from
Chennai underwent the railway surveys.
Information was gathered from the big
railway stations of Velachery, Tambaram,
Egmore, and Chennai Central.
The survey incorporated structured questions
about Train Infrastructure, Customer
Satisfaction, Cleanliness, and Quality of
Services.
.
Punctuality and
Frequency
However, 78% of respondents felt safe being a passenger on the
metro line due to the presence of security guards and surveillance
cameras.
However, suburban rail customers complained about concerns of
safety and congestion at night while travelling.
An outcry from female passengers over the need for additional
security guarantees on platforms and on trains.
65% of commuters felt railway stations needed better maintenance and
cleanliness.
Metro stations were rated well for hygiene, but suburban railway stations lacked
proper waste management.
Availability of seating and waiting areas was inadequate at several key stations.
Infrastructure and
Cleanliness
Safety and Security
80% of passengers felt safe during metro rail
travel due to surveillance cameras and
security personnel.
However, suburban rail users raised
concerns about overcrowding and safety
during late-night travel.
Female passengers highlighted the need for
increased security measures on platforms
and inside trains.
Ticketing and
Affordability
90% of passengers agreed that suburban
train fares were economical and budget-
friendly.
Metro fares were considered slightly
expensive compared to other modes of
transport.
Long queues at ticket counters were a
common complaint, despite the availability
of smart cards and mobile ticketing.
Passenger Comfort
and Accessibility
Merely half of commuters saw suburban
train seats as comfortable enough.
Although some questioned the costs of the
rides, it was nice to have no less than a few
air-conditioned metro trains making this
ride a pleasure.
Multiple suburban stations were
inaccessible to the needy, the aged, due to
poor construction, paucity of foot-over
bridges, and escalators.
Challenges
Identified
The congestion during rush hour is affecting
the comfort and safety of passengers.
The last mile connectivity between the train
terminals and residential/commercial areas
is inadequate.
Integration of metro, suburban rail, and
other public transportation networks needs
urgent improvement.
Cleaning and upkeep must be done here,
and they are required quite urgently,
especially in the suburban rail stations.
Conclusion
Chennai's railway system is essential for urban transit, but it may yet be
made better.
Since, in cleanliness, safety, and timeliness, metro rail services are the
finest, the suburban railway needs upgrading.
Passenger problems should be fixed by taking planned changes into
account to augment railway efficiency in Chennai.
Future extensions and technologically advanced solutions would form
the basis of improving the system and ensuring efficiency in Chennai.
