Medical Terminology Kimberly Jackson Rashidah Abdullah Chapter 13

PE tube Pressure Equalizing Tube - PE tube placement is the most common surgery performed in the United States. It is a procedure where a small plastic or metal tube is placed within the tympanic membrane to equalize the pressure behind the eardrum and to allow for adequate drainage of any fluid within the middle ear space. PE tubes have been shown to decrease the frequency of ear infections while not compromising hearing function. The PE tubes last between six months to a year and will usually fall out spontaneously. Once the tubes become displaced they will not be replaced immediately. If the child develops symptoms of repeated infections or fluid build up after the tubes have become dislodged, at some point we may need to consider replacement of the tubes.

EENT Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat - (ear, nose and throat) is the branch of medicine and surgery that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ear , nose , throat , and head and neck disorders. The full name of the specialty is otolaryngology–head and neck surgery. Practitioners are called otolaryngologists–head and neck surgeons , or sometimes otorhinolaryngologists

BC Bone Conduction - Bone conduction is the conduction of sound to the inner ear through the bones of the skull . Bone conduction is the reason why a person's voice sounds different to him/her when it is recorded and played back. Because the skull conducts lower frequencies better than air, people perceive their own voices to be lower and deeper than others do. This also explains why a recording of one's own voice sounds higher than one is accustomed to.

AU Both Ears - Right and Left Ear

OM Otitis Media - Otitis media ( Latin ) is inflammation of the middle ear , or a middle ear infection. It occurs in the area between the tympanic membrane and the inner ear , including a duct known as the eustachian tube . It is one of the two categories of ear inflammation that can underlie what is commonly called an earache, the other being otitis externa . Diseases other than ear infections can also cause ear pain , including cancers of any structure that shares nerve supply with the ear and shingles which can lead to herpes zoster oticus . Though painful, otitis media is not threatening and usually heals on its own within 2–6 weeks.

EM Emmetropia - describes the state of vision where an object at infinity is in sharp focus with the eye lens in a neutral or relaxed state. This condition of the normal eye is achieved when the refractive power of the cornea and the axial length of the eye balance out, which focuses rays exactly on the retina resulting in perfect vision. An eye in a state of emmetropia requires no correction.

XT Exotropia - is a form of strabismus where the eyes are deviated outward. It is the opposite of esotropia . People with exotropia often experience crossed diplopia . Intermittent exotropia is a fairly common condition. "Sensory exotropia " occurs in the presence of poor vision. Infantile exotropia (sometimes called "congenital exotropia ") is seen during the first year of life, and is less common than "essential exotropia " which usually becomes apparent several years later.

OS Left Eye

ACC Extraocular Movement - The extraocular muscles are the six muscles that control the movements of the (human) eye (there are four in bovines ). The actions of the extraocular muscles depend on the position of the eye at the time of muscle contraction

VA Visual Acuity - Visual acuity (VA) is acuteness or clearness of vision , which is dependent on the sharpness of the retinal focus within the eye and the sensitivity of the interpretative faculty of the brain. [1] Visual acuity is a measure of the spatial resolution of the visual processing system and is usually tested in a manner to optimize and standardize the conditions. To this end, black symbols on a white background are used (for maximum contrast ) and a sufficient distance allowed to approximate infinity in the way the lens attempts to focus.
