goodsfromobjectsfoundinnature.Materialproductionishasalwaysbeenand
stillisthebasisofhumanexistence.
Marxarguesthat“Thefirsthistoricalactistherefore,theproductionofmaterial
life”.Productionisasocialactivitysinceitrequirescooperation.Fromthesocial
relationshipsinvolvedinproductiondevelopsaMODEOFLIFEwhichcanbe
seenasanexpressionoftheserelationships.
Thusthenatureofmanandnatureofsocietyaswholederiveprimarilyfromthe
productionofmateriallife.

Therelationofproductionarethesocialrelationsfoundamongthepeopleinvolvedin
theprocessofproduction.Thesesocialrelationsaredeterminedbytheleveland
characterofthedevelopmentofproductiveforces.
‘Forces’and‘Relations’ofproductionarestronglyinterrelated.Thedevelopmentof
oneleadstoagrowingincompatibilityorcontradictionwiththeother.
Theforcesofproductiondeterminethesuperstructure.
Relationofproductionisnotmerelytheownershipofmeansofproduction.The
relationofproductionarerelationbetweenpeopleandpeoplewhereasmeansof
productionarerelationbetweenpeopleandthings.
Relationofproductionarereflectedintheeconomicownershipofproductiveforces.
Forexampleunderthecapitalismthemostfundamentaloftheserelationsisthe

suchusefulworkwhichincreasesthevalueofproducts.Workersselltheir

SURPLUSVALUE:Thesourceofsurplusvalueincapitalistsystemof
productionislocatedintheprocesswherebythevaluepaidbycapitalistfor
labourpowerissmallerthanthevaluewhichlabourpoweraddstoacommodity.
