Kasur: A City of Rich Heritage and Connectivity Kasur, a historic city in the Punjab province of Pakistan, holds cultural and historical significance. Renowned for its rich heritage, Kasur is famous as the birthplace of the great Sufi poet, Bulleh Shah. The city is situated on the banks of the River Ravi and is known for its agricultural landscape, traditional craftsmanship, and vibrant festivals. Kasur's diverse road network plays a vital role in connecting various parts of the city, facilitating the movement of people and goods efficiently and contributing to the city's economic and social activities.

Major Roads and Connectivity 1 Circular Road Serving as a prominent circular route, this road connects various neighborhoods and commercial areas within the city, enhancing intra-city connectivity. 2 Bulleh Shah Road Named after the revered Sufi poet Bulleh Shah, this road is a cultural hub, adorned with historical landmarks, markets, and institutions, reflecting the city's deep-rooted connection to its cultural heritage. 3 Ravi Road Following the course of the River Ravi, this road not only provides scenic views but also serves as a significant transportation artery, linking Kasur to other regions.

Transportation Challenges and Opportunities Physical Condition of Roads The physical condition of the roads in Kasur is unsatisfactory, with some existing roads in good condition while internal streets are mostly in bad condition. The main issue is the management of the existing infrastructure, with little space for parking and open drainage on both sides of the roads. Public Transport Kasur's public transport system includes trains, auto-rickshaws, Chingchi, buses, and coaches. While these modes of transport are available, the city faces challenges in terms of parking, congestion, and the need for improved coordination and management of the transportation network. Congestion Points The city has several major intersections and congestion points, such as Chandni Chowk, Kachery Chowk, and Steel Bagh Intersection, where traffic flow is often disrupted due to factors like encroachments, intermixing of slow and fast-moving vehicles, and lack of proper traffic management.

Improving Kasur's Transportation Infrastructure 1 New Links The plan for Kasur includes the development of an inner ring road and an outer bypass to reduce traffic pressure within the city and improve regional connectivity. These new links will be designed to accommodate the growing traffic demands and provide a more efficient transportation network. 2 Transport Terminals The city will also see the construction of new bus and wagon stands, as well as a dedicated truck stand, to address the inadequacies of the existing transport terminals and provide better facilities for public and commercial transportation. 3 Parking and Footpaths Improvements to the transportation infrastructure also include the provision of dedicated parking spaces and the development of footpaths along the roads, enhancing the overall accessibility and safety for both vehicles and pedestrians.

Upgrading Existing Roads and Intersections 1 Road Improvements The plan for Kasur includes the resurfacing, widening, and overall improvement of major roads, such as Lahore-Ferozepur Road, Khudian Road, Raiwind Road, Shahrah-e-Liaqat, and Shahbaz Khan Road, to enhance the physical condition and capacity of the city's transportation network. 2 Intersection Upgrades Kasur will also see the improvement of key intersections, including Steel Bagh Intersection, Khem Karan Road Intersection, Katchery Intersection, and Shahbaz Khan Road T-Junction, through the implementation of traffic management measures, such as roundabouts, islands, and channelization, to ensure smoother traffic flow and reduced congestion. 3 Old City Revitalization The plan also includes the upgradation of the old city area, focusing on the removal of encroachments, covering of open drains, and the construction of pedestrian bridges or underpasses to improve accessibility and safety for residents and visitors.

Addressing Traffic Challenges Accident Data According to the data, Kasur recorded a total of 69 road accidents in 2021, with 46 being fatal and 23 non-fatal, resulting in 127 casualties and 60 fatalities. This highlights the need for improved road safety measures and traffic management to reduce the risk of accidents. Vehicle Registration The total number of registered vehicles in Kasur district as of June 2021 was 52,322, with motorcycles being the most common at 29,939, followed by other vehicle types such as cars, trucks, and tractors. This growing vehicle population underscores the importance of expanding the transportation infrastructure to accommodate the increasing traffic demands. Congestion Hotspots The city has identified several major intersections and choke points, such as Chandni Chowk, Kachery Chowk, and Steel Bagh Intersection, where traffic congestion is a significant issue due to factors like encroachments, intermixing of slow and fast-moving vehicles, and lack of proper traffic management. Addressing these congestion hotspots is a key priority in the city's transportation improvement plans.

Intra-City Connectivity and Mobility Shahrah-e-Liaqat Ali Khan This important local link serves as the backbone of Kasur's road network, connecting various parts of the city and carrying both local and regional traffic. However, the road's physical condition and management of traffic, including encroachments and intermixing of slow and fast-moving vehicles, need to be addressed. Circular Road The Circular Road encircles the central parts of the city, but it is heavily encroached by unauthorized shops and experiences frequent traffic jams due to the mixing of slow and fast-moving vehicles and unauthorized parking along the road. Railway Road Located in the inner parts of the city, the Railway Road is a major commercial area that is badly encroached by vendors and unauthorized extensions, leading to poor physical condition and traffic management challenges. Shahbaz Khan Road This important local link connecting the central parts of the city to Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam is in relatively good physical condition and does not face significant traffic problems, making it an efficient intra-city transportation route.

The Way Forward for Kasur Comprehensive Planning Kasur's transportation improvement plan takes a holistic approach, addressing the city's immediate needs as well as long-term development goals, ensuring a well-integrated and sustainable transportation network. Infrastructure Upgrades The plan focuses on upgrading the existing road network, improving key intersections, and developing new links, such as the inner ring road and outer bypass, to enhance connectivity and reduce congestion within the city. Multimodal Integration The plan also emphasizes the importance of improving public transportation, providing dedicated parking facilities, and enhancing pedestrian infrastructure, promoting a more balanced and efficient transportation system that caters to the diverse mobility needs of Kasur's residents and visitors.
