Kinds of Dictionaries Reading and Writing Skills
What is a dictionary? A reference source in print or electronic form containing words usually alphabetically arranged along the information about their forms, pronunciations, functions, etymologies, meanings, and syntactic and idiomatic uses. A dictionary is a virtually indispensable for competent speaking, writing, and studying.
Two Kinds of Dictionary Specialized Dictionaries A specialized dictionary deals with particular aspect of language: synonyms and antonyms, pronunciation, slang, idiom, usage, etymology and so forth.
Two Kinds of Dictionary General Dictionaries A general dictionary - gives a wide range of information about words, including the most of the things that are separately treated in specialized dictionaries.
Unabridged Dictionaries An unabridged dictionary is one that has not been cut down from a larger work. It attempts to treat many rare and archaic words as well as all words in common use. An unabridged dictionary contains from 300,000 to 600,000 entries. Two Broad Categories of General Dictionary

Selecting a Dictionaries Reading and Writing Skills
Which special features are of interest to you? How are the entries listed alphabetically? How are the definitions arranged within each entry? Does the dictionary give clear guidance concerning proper usage of words? Select the Right Dictionary
Using the Dictionary Reading and Writing Skills
Use the guide words to locate the page on which the word appears. Find the word in its alphabetical order on the page. Find the Word
Look for the part of speech label. Skim all the definitions under the relevant part of speech. Find the definition that fits the context of your sentence Find the Definition
Avoid nonstandard and substandard words and usages. Avoid vulgar words. Avoid slang in nonfiction writing and in most speech. Use words with geographical or field (as in bio. For biological) labels only when suitable to the audience. Avoid archaic, obsolete or rare words unless there is some special purpose for using them. Avoid informal or colloquial words in formal writing and speaking. Check for a restrictive label or a usage note
