AIM The aim of this presentation is to point out the leadership qualities of King Parakramabahu vi and his contribution to country in various fields and how he unified the country under one rule. 4

INTRODUCTION Son of Sunethradevi and Prince Jayamahalena . He was connected to Gampola Royal family. Spent the childhood at Veedagama temple. He was the last native sovereign who ruled the country during the 15 th century. His first kingdom was in Raigama and later shifted to Kotte . Wife was Keerawelle bisawa and the daughter was Princess Ulakudaya . He constructed a temple of tooth relic in Kotte . He could supress the revolts in Malayarata as well as he could conqure the Yapa patuna . His adopted son Prince Sapumal joined with him in this task. He was a great patron of literature as he flourished many schools and pirivenas . 5

EARLY LIFE Belonged to Gampola Royal family. Grown in Veedagama temple in his childhood under the protection of Buddhist monks. Grandson of Prince Prakramabahu . In 1415 he has situated his kingdom in Raigama and later shifted to Kotte . He was influenced from the temple as he later contributed to Buddhism an literature. 6

CHRONOLOGY YEAR EVENT 1412 Coronation. 1415 Shifted to Kotte and built Temple of Tooth Relic. 1435 Defeated Wanni King. 1443 Directed a naval attack to India. 1449 Conquered Yapa patuna 1467 Died 7

CONQUERING THE BATTLES He ruled the country for 55 years In this period the country faced many foreign threats and he could defeat them successfully. He has suppressed the revolts in Malayarata and defeated the chiefs o Wanni . He could defeat the South Indian invasions successfully and he has directed a naval attack to South Indian ports. This was happened after the incident of stealing a cargo ship by Rayan Malavar in 1443. He sent tribute bearing envoys to China in years of 1416, 1436, 1445 and 1459. 8

Contd.. The main threat had come to him from Hindu empire of Vijayanagara . This empire has grown his regional power in South India. King Parakramabahu seized his opportunity to subdue the Jaffna kingdom The major battle he has directed was conquering Yapa patuna . In this battle his adopted son Prince Sapumal joined with him in defeating the enemy. He won the Jaffna peninsula in his thirty fifth year of reign. This was visible in Selalihini sandeshaya written in that era. 9

Contd.. The Dravadian leader Aarya chakrawarthie has died in these battles and king has arrested many Dravadian leaders in this battles. 10

CONTRIBUTION TO BUDDHISM King Parakramabahu built the Temple of Tooth Relic in his kingdom and this was consisted with three floors. He constructed the Pepiliyane Sunethradevi pirivena having honor of his mother. In his era Ceylon became famous for Theravada Buddhism and many monks from Burma and Siam came to Ceylon to study. 11

CONTRIBUTION TO LITERATURE Notable poets were the Buddhist monks such as Ven. Thotagamuwe Sri Rahula Thero , Ven. Weedagama Maithree Thero and Keragala Wanarathana Thero . Selalihini sandeshaya was written in this era expecting a baby for Princes Ulakudaya . Kokoila sandeshaya , Paravi sandeshsya , Gaira sandeshaya , Hansa sandeshaya were also written. Anthologies written in this era were Loweda sangarawa , Guththilaya , Kawyashekaraya . 12

KNOWLEDGE Knowledge is a state of mind that getting the information about every matter and understanding the subordinates. A good leader gather knowledge from every one and his knowledge should not be limited to a certain category. He should be aware about every aspect he deals with day to day life. King Parakramabahu had his education from the temple under the protection of Buddhist monks. Contributed to the buddhist monks to uplift the literacy of the people. 14

Contd.. Some anthologies like lowedasangarawa were written by the influence of the king with the idea of getting people use to read. The history says that the king him self was also poet. 15

MAN MANAGEMENT Art of holding men and caring for them. A leader should decide what is to be done and getting it done through others I an efficient manner. When the Northern portion had fallen into the hands of South Indian king he entrusted the task of chasing him to Prince Sapumal . King Parakramabahu appointed prince Sapumal for the task of defeating him and bring his family members to him. he was highly pleased with his son’s performance and handed over the administration of Jaffna to him. By this it shows how he could manage the people who was under him. 16

COURAGE Both physical and mental aspects are included. The mental quality helps to face the challenges in a peace and calm full mind. By practicing this quality it helps man to control himself in a difficult situation. The leader who is having mental courage will always accept his fault when he is wrong. Though king’s sons died in their infancy king used his adopted son in defeating the foreign threats. 17

Contd.. But his relations didn’t have any desire to give the throne to prince Sapumal . They wanted it to give to the son of princes Ulakudaya . King had the courage to solve this problem in the Royal family. He gave the throne of Yapa patuna to prince Sapumal and the ownership of the country to his grandson. 18

INITATIVE A quality which is seeing what has to be done and commencing a course of action. This is necessary in all ranks. When soldiers meet a new and unexpected situation they replace their command with prompt action. The ruler of the hill country at that era tried to break the rules of the king. He was Jothiya Situ. He did not pay the due taxes to the Kotte kingdom and acted in his own way. Prince Sapumal was sent to fight with him and when fighting broke out Jothiya Situ fleed away. 19

Contd.. He acted according to the situation and avoided the problems. He used his initiative to deal with the people who cheated him like jothiya situ and he decided the way that he should treat them. There he decided whether he should fight with him or deal with him in brain. 20

ENTHUSIASM A quality that shows the interest of a leader to make his men rise. It is the power for the strength and liveness of his team. This make the moral of the men high and make them rise above their limitations. The most powerful weapon is an enthusiastic high moral team. King Parakramabahu as a great patron in literature gave an enormous contribution to literature. Enthusiasm to uplift the literacy of the people. 21

Contd.. Anthologies like Lowedasangarawa were written. Many sandesha were written to increase the aesthetic experience of the people. 22

LESSONS LEARNT There are so many important lessons that we can grab from this kings’ life. Even though he lived in the past era those lessons are applicable for the present society. When analyzing the character of king Parakramabhu vi, he had most vital leadership qualities needed to succeed as a leader. The contribution he has done to the country at that era was enormous. Through his life story his leadership qualities were highlighted as they were shown in every matter in his life career. 23

CONCLUSION King Parakramabahu vi was a great leader who unified the country as the last native king who did so. He conducted many battles during his period and some of them were major battles in the history. He had fight with the foreign empires also. As well as his military life he could balance his religious life and the connection with the people. He contributed to Buddhism during his ruling period and he was one of the kings who made temple of tooth relic. 24
