Kitchen
kitchen Kitchen is a room or part of room used for cooking and food preparation. A stove, a sink , a refrigerator and kitchen cabinets arranged here. The main function of a kitchen is cooking or preparing food but it may be used for dining, food storage, entertaining, dishwashing. The kitchen is one of the most busiest and most expensive room in the home. Creating a good kitchen is lot like creating a good meal. Properly planning a new kitchen or remodelling a kitchen is important as choosing the right material and installing them precisely.
Kitchen planning basics The height of kitchen platform should be ranging in between 2’9” to 2’11”. The depth of platform should be ranging between 2’ to 2’6”. The length of platform depends on the kitchen design and room size. Maximum height for overhead cabinets is 7’0” and the height for cabinet from platform should not be less than 2’0”. Make sure that nothing obstructs the work triangle.
Don’t tuck your oven or other appliances into a corner you will need a bit space on both sides to open door to access things on the counter. Think about the need of single, double or triple bowl sink on a layout, the number of bowl will affect the size of sink. Common size for single bowl sink 600 x 400 x 150 mm 600 x 450 x 250 mm 750 x 450 x 250 mm
kitchen planning basics When planning kitchen consider family size, number of persons who will use the kitchen, type of client and type and amount of cooking, baking, and preparation they will do. Some people choose open kitchen by that they can talk to other family members easily, eat meals and entertain their guest as well. While some people choose private kitchen to work undisturbed.
Location and relation to other parts of house. The location of kitchen is also important and depends on several factors. Direct connection to dining room. Direct connection to refuse waste without passing through social zone or guest entry. Easily accessible from garage or driveway to facilitate transport of supplies. Should be close to guest entry. Should have connection with secondary entry of house.
Sizes of kitchen If the kitchen room size is less than 60 sqft. The kitchen is small size. If it ranges between 60 to 90 sqft. The kitchen is medium size. If it is more than 100 sqft. Than it is large size kitchen.
cabinets Kitchen cabinets provide our kitchen with a huge visual impact, kitchen cabinet provide storage solutions and integrate our appliances with the rest of the room . Cabinets use half of our budget. We use them every day, selecting durable and attractive should be top priority. Cabinets are of various sizes and shapes like base cabinet ( which rest on the floor and rise about waist level), overhead cabinets ( which are attached to upper portion of the wall), tall cabinets ( these runs from floor up to 5’-0” and more.
Kitchen Work triangle Locate the three parts of our kitchen – the refrigerator, sink and cooktop. It is an imaginary triangle and we move over these imaginary triangle lines, from center of our cooktop to refrigerator, refrigerator to sink, and sink to cooktop. The kitchen work triangle total should range from 12’-0” to 27’-0”. It means that the sides should not be less than 4’ and not more than 9’. And we should be able to walk in unobstructed lines. A large triangle would require too much walking while a smaller one would create a cramped layout.
Activity centers Each center will be organized according to an activity focus, be assigned a designated space and encompass storage for tools needed for that activities. In most kitchens activity centers overlap. A sink/ cutting center – the zone for peeling, chopping and washing food. A cook and serve center – the zone of cooking, baking, and utensils storage area. A refrigerator center – the zone of storing groceries etc. A Mixing center – the zone of food preparation and mixing.
Sink and cutting centre We need sink in this area, water and drainage for food preparation and clean up jobs. This center's focus: washing, chopping, draining and preparing food. Its designated area: the sink and a counter area next to the sink. Storage for this center can include the counter, sink storage areas, a drawer and cabinet space. This is the most used center in the kitchen and should be central to other major centers. Other things present here:- dustbin, dishwasher, water heater. On sides of sink leave minimum 1’6”, and 9’ to 1’0” . In this center we should plan a window.
Cook and Serve center This centre is planed around the range or cooktop. This work area is to planed for cooking and serving food. It is most desirable to store dishes in this area. In this centre we should avoid having a window because it takes away storage space and makes venting or hood installation difficult. Counter space on either side of range is desirable, 2’0” is minimum And 1’6”(minimum) to set serving dishes.
Refrigerator centre the refrigerator is best located so it will not block the movement from one work centre to another, so it usually located at the end of the work area. We should provide at least 9” on latch side so the door opens completely. The fridge location should not interfere food transfer between counters and the dining table. It should be located near the entry of the kitchen where you will bring grocier’s into home.
Mixing centre Ideally this centre is located between fridge and the sink centre. If possible avoid window here so we get the needed wall storage. Most canned and packaged, bottled food should be stored in this area as well as equipment’s. Length of counter needed for this centre is minimum 36”. If we locate this centre between range and sink, it will involve more travel by the user.
Types of kitchen One wall kitchen Parallel or corridor kitchen L shape kitchen U shape kitchen Island kitchen
One wall kitchen These type of kitchen are generally found in studio or loft space because it is ultimate space saver. In one wall kitchen all three centre are in one line or on one wall. In this type of kitchen excessive walking is required. Require more wall space. It don’t have corners so no dead space
One wall kitchen Pros Unimpeded traffic flow Maximum openness : no barriers. Simple and easy to design. All services (water, electrical, drainage) in one place. Cons Limited counter space. Does not utilize the classic work triangle.
Two wall kitchen Two walls facing each other have all of the kitchen services. It has compact work triangle. Less expensive and without corners no dead storage space. Cross traffic can interfere in with the work triangle. Difficult for two people to work together.
Two wall kitchen Pros With counters on both sides, this layout is highly functional because it uses the classic work triangle. This layout gives a bit more space for counters and cabinets. Cons Difficult for two person to work at the same time. Useless fourth wall.
L-shape kitchen It is most common type of kitchen and is usually found in many homes. It is highly flexible design that can be adapted to many sizes and styles of kitchen. L shape layout reduces walking time between kitchen stations as it has efficient work triangle. Usually one side is long and one is short because of placement of big appliances.
L-shape kitchen Pros Best use of work triangle. Increased countertop space. Can add an island Cons Long walk from end points of the of work triangle (i.e. from range to refrigerator). Blind corners are problem. Corner base cabinets and wall cabinets are difficult to reach.
U shape kitchen The U-shape kitchen can be thought of as a corridor-shape plan except that one end has countertops or kitchen services and another is left open to allow access. PROS This arrangement maintains good workflow by means of the work triangle. The close end provides more space for extra cabinets. CONS Not suitable to have a kitchen island because we don’t have enough space around the island
ISLAND KITCHEN A well planed and well designed kitchen island creates additional space for appliances like microwaves and dishwashers, cooktop and become the hub of several overlapping workstations. Whether the kitchen is large or small, the island need careful planning. The size and shape should be in proportion to the kitchen, an island who is too big or complicated can turn into an obstacle.
Some Ways To Make Island Kitchen More Efficient And Functional. Use a simple island to provide additional counter space. In large kitchen, include a second sink in the island with counter space on sides. Using it as a additional counter for appliances like dishwasher, cooktop, range in a kitchen where wall space is less Using as a second work triangle in a large, two cook kitchen.
Kitchen design styles We have the freedom to choose between hundreds of kitchen cabinets design , countertops, range hoods and other appliances in order to develop our own unique kitchen. The various styles are Traditional 5. Old world Country style 6. Coastal Contemporary Modern
Traditional Kitchen Style Common traditional styles include black and white checkered flooring, wood floors, cherry wood kitchen cabinet with green marble counters and even all-white designs with blue accents. When choosing appliances, black and stainless steel work with both cherry and white cabinetry. White tiles add a clean look and help reflect light, and artisanal or vintage-look light fixtures add special touches.
Country kitchen style Country kitchens feature wooden workstations or pot racks that do not match other furnishings. Colours mean everything in a country kitchen . Warmly coloured, unpolished (or polish that's not overdone) woods such as maple and pine are common. Combine these woods with whites, cream colors or light browns as the backdrop colors and you are on your way to a magazine-quality kitchen. Natural greens, bright blues and reds provide accent.
stainless steel in the form of hanging lights or chef workstations works well in this setting. Plaids and checkered patterns on seat cushions add to the country motif.
Contemporary kitchen style Contemporary kitchen cabinets are made of woods paler than cherry wood, a signature of the traditional kitchen. Light blues, clear reds and other bright colors are regulars in contemporary kitchens. Contemporary kitchens are known for their usefulness. No-frills cabinetry and simplicity provide a tidy look. Contemporary kitchen cabinets have very little lacework. Some people even use plain aluminium kitchen cabinets that are painted white, giving their kitchens slightly retro appearances.
Modern kitchen style This style is futuristic looking, using concrete, stone, metal and glass. High tech comes to mind when thinking of this type of decor with lots of open space, bright lighting and square lines. White walls are predominant in a modern home with furnishings, accessories and fabrics sporting neutral tone-on-tone color schemes. A lacquered finish on kitchen cabinetry is common. The art and accessories in a modern interior are extremely important and must exhibit striking shapes or forms to make a statement. Special pieces should be called out with spotlights for visual impact.
Coastal kitchen style Whether you live at the beach or just wish you did, you can count on cool shades of blue, green, white and sand to create a vacation-time mood. Seagrass and wicker seating are casual, comfortable and coastal. Fabrics and flooring designed to stand up to wet bathing suits make coastal-style kitchens easy to care for, and window treatments that allow for maximum sunlight will have everyone in let’s-get-to-the-beach mode bright and early .
Old world If you yearn for a time when materials were solid and craftsmanship was king, old world design will embrace you in history and luxury. Look for dark mahogany finishes with lots of carving and detail, countertops with ogee or bullnose edges, and stone or wooden floors. Add historical accessories
