KOYNA DAM (MAHARASHTRA) WATER POWER ENGINEERING

INTRODUCTION The Koyna Dam is one of the largest dams in Maharashtra, India. It is a rubble-concrete dam constructed on Koyna River which rises in Mahabaleshwar, a hillstation in Sahyadri ranges. It is located in Koyna Nagar, Satara district, nestled in the Western Ghats on the state highway between Chiplun and Karad. WATER POWER ENGINEERING

LAKE TAPPING Lake Tapping – A nonconventional intake system was created by piercing the lake from the bottom by blasting the rock plug using dynamite. Explosive used for the lake tapping were specially bought from Denmark . WATER POWER ENGINEERING

LAKE TAPPING (KOYNA) The first lake tapping was done successfully in 1999 which produces 65TMC water second lake tapping was done on 26th April 2012 and water rose upto 15 ft high creating waves. The process of double tapping was the first of its kind in ASIA WATER POWER ENGINEERING

EARTHQUAKE : KOYNANAGAR The Koyna earthquake of December 11, 1967, killed about 200 people and injured a few thousand. and it occured near the the site of koyna dam The epicentre was within 5 km of the Koyna Dam (17° 23′ N., 73° 45′ E.). The depth of focus of the earthquake has been estimated at about 30 km. The earthquake was felt over distances up to 700 km from the epicentre. Total damage: 4 lakhs USD WATER POWER ENGINEERING
