Introduction P. C. Revolution Affected directly or indirectly by computerisation. E nhance not only record keeping, but practice management, patient education and motivation.

Fig.:P.C. Revolution

Humans narrate information better than data . It handle data better than information. In volves in research, teaching, administration or patient care is based on generation, storage and manipulation of information. R outine communications with greater speed and accuracy than is humanly possible. M assive computation and calculations more rapidly than humans

Characteristics of computer

Speed M aking calculations at a very fast rate E xecute over a million instructions per secon d

Accuracy and reliability Hi gh level of endurance capacity W ork without tiring . Its work on the principle of electric impulse transmission which makes it very reliable and mistake proof.

Memory St oring large amount of data Au xiliary memory systems. A stonishing speed Modern day computers can retrieve data from its memory in a few nanoseconds

Integrity Sequence of instructions to be obeyed. S equence of instructions called a program Th e instructions that has been given to it and furnishes the desired result

Versatility A dopt several modes of presentation such as audio, visual, animation, etc.

Uses of computer in Orthodontics

Administrative applications

Clinical application

Computerized scheduling C omputerized scheduling modules. Not to maintain paper appointment book. To allows the receptionist to find available times for patient appointments and log them on the computer .

Computerized dental patient records Ele ctronic storage of diagnostic information. Electronic dental patient record (E.D.P.R.) is slowly and steadily replacing bulky paper records Di gital format which can be retrieved, duplicated , catalogued , transmitted and archived as needed.

Applications of an electronic record storage system Patient information such as name, age, sex, address and telephone numbers Chief complaint Medical and Dental history Data from clinical examination

5. Diagnostic tests and their results 6. Storage of patients photograph 7. Storage of patients radiographs 8. Storage of scanned patients study models 9. Storage of diagnosis and treatment plan 10. Treatments performed and patient progress

11. Medical and dental laboratory prescriptions

Practice management C onsumerist society practitioner P atient satisfaction and job satisfaction C ost effectiveness V aluable management information

Book more a ppointments and patients M ore p roductivity and efficiency B etter p atient e xperience Better communication Better patient m anagement Higher satisfaction scores

What Types of Orthodontic Software Is Available for Practice? 3D imaging Treatment planning Practice management

Here are some orthodontics software used in practice management. They are Vista Dent Orthoselect Ortho2 Edge Dolphin imaging Ormco Insignia Cloud 9 ortho Practice Works Ortho Banc

Patient education To educate patients about diseases, prevention and cure. Multimedia simply means using multiple media like text, pictures, graphics, movies and sound to make a presentation . Internationally, various multimedia patient education presentations are available, which can be purchased and played on computer system for benefit of patient, just like a video cassette played

Case presentations P resentations softwares like Microsoft Office, Power Point This same tool can be used by dentists to make slide presentations, wherein one can use text, colour, pictures and actual photographs. These tools are extremely user friendly .

Dental imaging God sent gift for most dentists. Dental imaging is a solution wherein, a small intraoral camera is interfaced to the computer, so that the user has to just focus the camera to capture the image on the monitor, click and the image can be saved as a part of a picture album for each patient in the computer itself.

These images can be viewed, edited, transformed into slides, and printed . Digital cameras are available that can be used to capture intraoral and extra oral pictures which are later stored in a computer for future viewing.

Continuing medical education and research reference Professional expertise and growth of every doctor Access to medical and dental Journals, and access to large volume of medical reference material is easily available on the Internet and also on C D-ROM Numerous dental web sites The internet offer vast amount of information related to dentistry. Communication and consultatior with colleagues in all parts octhe world is possible using Email and Internet

Communication and entertainment Function as an answering machine and a fax. It can link you to the Internet and can be used –or international communications via the Email. It can also be used as tool for entertainment, not only for playing fascinating games, but can be used to watch television programs, as a CD player and CD movie player

Computerized cephalometric system Prior to the introduction of computerized cephalometric oil angular and line measurements were calculated manually. Besides being time consuming, it involves the possibility human error.

Computers aided diagnosis Several programs have been designed to aid the physician to make multiple and complex diagnoses. The computer is able to construct a differential diagnosis after being presented the necessary historical items, symptoms, physical signs, and laboratory abnormalities associated with a specific medical disorder

Medical imaging Includes X-rays, ultrasound, and nuclear imaging systems. Clinical applications of ultrasound diagnosis have broadened considerably. They are also used to diagnose cranial-facial pathologies by the dental surgeon

CAT scanner as an instrument to provide non-invasive information regarding the size, shape and health of major body organs. However, a new more versatile, and safer method of providing three-dimensional views of the inner body has emerged in recent years. This technique, called N1V1R (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance}, has several advantages over CAT.
