What is labour welfare??? Why is labour Welfare important in a company ??? Labour Welfare refers to anything that is done for the comfort and improvement of employees and is provided over and above the wages. Welfare helps in keeping the morale and motivation of the employees high so as to retain the employees for longer duration.

Definitions… “A state of faring or doing well. Freedom from calamity, enjoyment of health and prosperity”. By Chambers dictionary ‘Efforts to make life worth living for the workers.’ By Oxford Dictionary ‘Anything done for the intellectual, physical, moral and economic betterment of the workers, whether by employers, by Govt. or by other agencies, over and above what is laid down by law’ By Labour Investigation Committee “Such services, facilities and amenities as adequate canteens, rest and recreation facilities, arrangements for travel to and from work, and for the accommodation of workers employed at a distance from their houses, and such other services, amenities and facilities as contribute to improve the conditions under which workers are employed.” By ILO 1947

About Labour welfare need   not be in monetary terms only. It may be in any kind/forms also. Employee welfare includes: monitoring of working conditions. creation of industrial harmony through infrastructure for health. insurance against disease, accident and unemployment for the workers and their families.

Cont … Welfare measures   may be introduced by the Employers (Voluntary) Government (Statutory) Employees Social or charitable agency. The purpose of providing such facilities is to make their work life better and also to raise their standard of living

The worker spends more than a quarter of his life in his working place. Therefore, the worker has every right to demand that the condition under which he works should be reasonable and provides proper safeguards for life and health. The amount of dedication, quality of work, commitment to the organization, morale etc. are all determined by the type and amount of welfare a worker receives.
