Laticifers and Resin Canals Iqra Botanist 803494-1298 Govt. Graduate College

Laticifer A laticifer is a type of elongated secretory cell found in the leaves and/or stems of plants that produce latex and rubber as secondary metabolites . Structure: Thin Walled Greatly Elongated Branched Structure Contain Milky Juice Complex Composition called Latex

Classification of Laticifers They are grouped in two major groups on the basis of their structure. Articulated: There are compound in origin (originated from the no. of cells), consisting of longitudinal files of cells, the end walls of which break down wholly or in part. Such perforation of and walls gives rise to laticifers that are tube- like in form and resemble xylem vessel in origin. This type of laticifers have been formerly called laticiferous vessels.

2. Non-articulated: These are originated from single cell, (simple in origin), which through continued growth develop into tube-like stc . often much branched, but typically they undergo no fusion with other similar cells. These types of laticifers are called laticiferous cell

Distribution of Laticifers Laticifers are distributed both in vegetative and reproductive parts except in anther lobes and stigma. In stem and pedicel, laticifers occur in the cortex as well as in the pith either close to phloem or few cells away from phloem

Distribution These are following family in which Latax vessela are present. Papaveracae Cactaceae Musaceae Aroideae Euphorbiaceae Urticaceae

Structural Characteristics Laticifer tubes have irregularly edged walls and a larger inner diameter than the surrounding parenchyma cells. In the development of the cell, elongation occurs via karyokinesis and no cell plate develops resulting in coenocytic cells which extend throughout the plant.

Functions Laticifers produce and store latex that is released upon rupture of laticifers. Compounds preformed in the latex, such as peptidases, chitinases , and chitin-binding proteins. Laticifers play important defensive roles against microbes and/ or insects. Latex peptidases emerge as defensive molecules in several ways.

Development of Laticifer In laticifer development, cell division in ground meristem originates a daughter cell through the formation of the cell plate and not by nuclear divisions. Then , the daughter cell differentiates into a laticiferous cell whose terminal walls may be observed in the laticifer apex.

Resin canals Resin canals or resin ducts are elongated, tube-shaped intercellular spaces surrounded by epithelial cells which secrete resin into the canal. These canals are orientated longitudinally and radially in between fusiform rays. They are usually found in late wood: denser wood grown later in the season

Function of Resin canals In pine species, resin is produced and stored in specialized structures called resin ducts or canals. These ducts form an interconnected network that delivers resin to wounding sites.

Formation of Resin canals These canals are formed by secondary division of growth cells (cambium), and are lined with a thin-layered wall of secretory epithelium enclosing a central hollow portion.
