Introduction What is landslide? Landslide impacts Where do landslide Usually Occur? Case History of Destructive Landslides in Asia Landslide Prone areas in Myanmar How to recognize Landslide Warning Sign ? What is landslide? Down-slope movement of soil, rock and debris or earth under the influence of gravity, and also the land form that result Causes of Landslides Natural causes Man-made causes 13 July 2016 4

Landslide Impacts Direct Impact Physical Damage Debris may block roads, supply lines (telecommunication, electricity, water, etc.), and water-ways. Casualties Death and injury to people and animals. Indirect losses Loss of productivity of agricultural and forest land, flooding . 13 July 2016 5

Indirect Impacts Disruptions or hindrances of the economic activities Interruption of the traffic Reduction of tourist demand (These indirect impacts are difficult to assess.) 13 July 2016 6

Where do landslide Usually Occur? Associated with hilly or mountain landscapes. Also common allow coastlines and river valleys. Landslide occur in most frequently in region where climate and precipitation, bedrock and soil condition, and slopes are susceptible to failure. 13 July 2016 7

How to recognize Landslide Warning Sign? New cracks appear in plaster, tile, brick, or foundation. Sudden appearance and rapid expansion of cracks on road pavements or ground surface. Outside walls, walks, or stairs being pulling away from the building. Sudden breakage of water supply lines and other underground installations and underground utility lines. 13 July 2016 18

Sudden appearance and disappearance of creeks. A faint rumbling sound that increases in volume become noticeable as the landslide nears. Bulging ground appears at the base of a slope. Fences, retaining walls, utility poles, or trees tilt or move. Rapid increase in water levels in pools, steams, etc. in mountainous areas. 13 July 2016 19

13 July 2016 20

General guidelines for those living in a landslide-prone area For normal time Do not built near slopes, close to mountain edges. Minimize home hazards. Plant ground cover on slopes and building retaining walls. Have flexible pipe fitting installing to avoid gas or water leaks. In mudflow areas, building channels or deflection walls to direct flow around buildings. Listen to weather forecasts. Remain awake during nights of heavy continuous rain and be ready to move to a safer location. 13 July 2016 21

Observe the warnings signs mentioned and inform the authorities when such warning signs are recognized. Listen for abnormal sounds of soil and rock movement or breaking of trees. Observe abnormal behavior of domestic animals. Never go closer to observe cracks on the slope. 13 July 2016 22

Prior to a Potential Landslide Stay alert and stay awake. If you are in areas susceptible to landslides and debris flows, consider leaving if it is safe to do so. Contact your local authority, village disaster committee, fire services department, or police force. Especially be alert when driving. In case need to evacuate, do so immediately. While evacuating, do not cross possible landslide paths. 13 July 2016 23

When see falling rocks, seek cover behind trees and other solid objects. Inform affected neighbors. Evacuate. Getting out of the path of a landslide is best protection. 13 July 2016 24

During a Landslide Quickly move. If escape is not possible, curl into a tight ball and protect head. After a Landslide Stay away from the slide area . Check for injury and trapped persons near the slide, without entering the direct slide area . 13 July 2016 25

Listen local radio or television stations for the latest emergency information. Watch for flooding. Check the building foundation. Replant damaged ground as soon as possible. 13 July 2016 26
