Tenses in french Like english, in french too there are 3 tenses Le présent ( present tense)- in french mostly only one type of present tense is used which we use commonly Le passé (past tense)- there are five types of past tense in french i. Le passé simple au pass é historique(used only in written french),ii.Le passé composé (used to show actions completed in past), iii.Le passé anterior, iv. Imparfait, v. plus-que-parfait Le Futur (future tense) - the future tense has three common types i. Le futur simple, ii.Le futur anterior, iii. Le futur proché.
Le passe compose It is also called as compound past Passe compose is most frequently used form of past tense in written as well as spoken french It is used to express an action that has been finished completely or incompletely at the time of speech, or at some (possibly unknown) time in the past. The passe compose is formed using combination of two verbs One verb is an auxiliary verb(avoir/ etre) and another is participle form of main verb.
La formation Sujet + avoir/etre+ participle (subject) (conjugation) (verb participle) * mostly passe compose is composed using avoir only some verbs are conjugated with etre Example: 1. j’ ai vu ( i saw) 2.Tu as parl é ( you spoke) 3. Le garçon est sorti ( the boy went)
Le Passe compose avec avoir *While using avoir to make participle form of verb following rules are followed- ER verbs= remove ‘er’ instead of that use é -eg. parler(to talk)= parl é IR verbs = remove ‘r’ eg finir (to finish) - ir + i = fini (finished) RE verb= remove ‘re’ & use ‘u’ eg. attendre (to wait) - re + u = attendu (waited)
One conjugated verb using avoir ( auxiliary ) & voir (participle) j’ ai vu (I saw) nous avons vu (we saw) tu as vu (you saw) vous avez vu (you saw) il/elle/on a vu (he/she/it saw) ils/elles ont vu (they(m)/they(f) saw)
avec different types de phrases Le negetif- the past participle comes after the second part of the negation Example- Je suis parti.→ Je ne suis pas parti . Elle a fini - Elle n’a pas fini.
Interrogatif Questions in the passé composé can be asked using intonation (i.e., voice inflection) alone, or it can be formed by beginning the question with Est-ce que (Est-ce qu’ ) INTONATION:1.Il a travaillé hier?( Did he work yesterday?) 2. Vous êtes rentrés tard?( Did you ( masculine plural ) return home late?) WITH EST-CE QUE (or EST-CE QU’): 1.Est-ce qu’il a travaillé hier?( Did he work yesterday?) 2. Est-ce que vous êtes rentrés tard?( Did you ( masculine plural ) return home late?)
