What is Leadership? Different people defines “leadership” in so many ways. Below are some of the definitions: Leadership is defined as the process of influencing the activities of an organized group toward goal achievement.(Rauch & Behling .)

Cont … Leadership is the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organization.(House et al., 1999 ) Leadership is a kind of power where one person has the ability to influence or change the values, beliefs, behaviour and attitudes of another person ( Ganta , and Manukonda , 2014 )

Cont … Leadership is the ability of developing and communicating a vision to a group of people that will make that vision true (Kenneth Valenzuela, 2007 ) leadership is a process where leaders use their skills and knowledge to lead and bring a group of employees in the desired direction that is relevant to their organization’s goals and objectives (Jackson and Parry, 2008)
Who is a leader? A leader is "a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal ". A leader is one who inspires and motivates actions; having a can do personality and strong leadership skills A leader by its meaning is one who goes first and leads by example, so that others are motivated to follow him A leader is the one in the charge, the person who convinces other people to follow. A great leader inspires confidence in other people and moves them to action.

What is Leadership Style? Leadership style is viewed as a combination of different characteristics, traits and behaviors that are used by leaders for interacting with their subordinates. ( Mitonga-Monga & Coetzee, 2012 ).
Types of Leadership Styles Democratic Leadership (Participative Leadership Autocratic ( Authoritarian Leadership) Delegative (Laissez Faire) Leadership Bureaucratic Leadership There are several types of leadership styles that are used by leaders today. The following are some of the examples:
Democratic Leadership Style The democratic leadership style is also known as the participative style. It encourages people to be a part of the decision making process. The democratic leader keeps its people informed about everything that affects them and shares decision making and problem solving responsibilities.
Characteristics of Democratic Leadership Style Group members are encouraged to share ideas and opinions, even though the leader retains the final say over decisions. Members of the group feel more engaged in the process. Creativity is encouraged and rewarded
Advantages of Democratic Leadership Style It is a leadership style anyone can practice. It helps to solve complex problems. It builds team-based relationships. It makes honesty a top priority. It improves the relevant knowledge of the team. It gives team members a look at the bigger picture. It creates higher levels of job satisfaction.
Disa dvantages of Democratic Leadership Style It can cause disharmony if it is misapplied . It can cause leaders to start fence-sitting. It may never reach a true consensus. It struggles to offer a clear definition of leadership. It does not always offer a positive outcome.
Autocratic Leadership Style Autocratic leadership is also known as authoritarian leadership. It is a type of leadership style characterized by individual control over all decisions and little input from group members. Authoritarian leaders make decisions independently with little or no input from the rest of the group.
Characteristics of Autocratic Leadership Style Allows little or no input from group members Requires leaders to make almost all of the decisions Provides leaders with the ability to dictate work methods and processes Tends to create highly structured and very rigid environments Discourages creativity and out-of-the box thinking
Advantages of Autocratic Leadership Style It allows for fast decisions to be made. It improves overall communication. It improves productivity. It handles crisis situations effectively. It reduces employee stress. It counters team inexperience.
Disa dvantages of Autocratic Leadership Style It may impair the morale of the group. It does not offer a sense of professional ownership. It creates a work culture based on the leader. It creates a system of dependence. It creates a lack of trust.
Disa dvantages of Autocratic Leadership Style cont … It may cause some employees to rebel . It reduces the amount of group input received. It creates moments of insecurity within the leadership. It creates a lack of feedback. It causes everyone to rely on the experience of the leader. It eliminates innovation from the process.
Delegative Leadership Style Delegative leadership style is also known as Laissez Faire leadership. It is a type of leadership style where leaders offer little ( hands-off ) or no guidance to group members and leave decision-making up to group members.
Characteristics of Delegative Leadership Style There is very little guidance from leaders There is complete freedom for followers to make decisions Leaders provide the tools and resources needed Group members are expected to solve problems on their own
Advantages of Delegative Leadership Style It allows team members to maximize their own leadership skills. It provides the people with the most experience to shine. It creates an environment of independence. It encourages team members to explore new ideas. It allows individual teams to create their own environment. It generates more individual satisfaction for the work being done. It provides the leader to be strategic with their skills.
Disadvantages of Delegative Leadership Style It downplays the role of the leader on the team. It reduces the cohesiveness of the group. It changes how accountability is assigned within the group. It allows leaders to avoid leadership. It is a leadership style which employees can abuse. It can be difficult to adapt to changing situations .
Bureaucratic Leadership Style Bureaucratic leadership is where the leader manages "by the book¨ Everything must be done according to procedure or policy. This leader is really more of a police officer than a leader. He or she enforces the rules.
Characteristics of Bureaucratic Leadership Style A clear hierarchy: Firm chain of command. Specialization: Everyone in a bureaucracy has a specific job to do. A division of labor: E very task is broken down into its component parts, and different people work on different parts of the task. A set of formal rules : standard operating procedures of written instructions are given for each specialized job.
Advantages of Bureaucratic Leadership Style The rules and procedures are decided for every work. The duties and responsibilities of each job are clearly defined The selection process and promotion procedures are based on merit and expertise . The division of labour assists workers in becoming experts in their jobs.
Advantages of Bureaucratic Leadership Style cont … It removes favoritism from the equation. It centralizes duties and roles within a team. It promotes higher levels of creativity. It creates a stronger level of job security. It is a predictable form of leadership. It always seeks to create best practices. It is a leadership style which offers upward scalability. It is a style of leadership which encourages familiarity.
Disa dvantages of Bureaucratic Leadership Style This system suffers from too much of red tape and paper work. The employees do not develop belongingness to the organisation. The excessive reliance on rules and regulations and adherence to these policies inhibit initiative and growth of the employees. The employees become so used to the system, they resist to any change and introduction of new techniques of operations.
Disa dvantages of Bureaucratic Leadership Style cont … It has a structure which has limited forward movement. It is often based on a system of quotas. It is a leadership style which bases decisions on cost structures. It does not offer freedom for creativity. It is not always a system that is efficient. It can be difficult for bureaucratic leaders to adapt to change.
In today’s society, leadership inspires other people to pursue their vision to the extent that it later becomes a shared vision between the leaders and the subordinates that contributes towards the success of an organization. Conclusion
