LEAF LOG MAKER MACHINE (MARK-I)
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING BHARATH INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Bharath University, Chennai -073.
ABSTRACT LEAF LOG MAKER is machine which convert the dry leaves to fire logs. It is manually operated machine with simple design. This machine is to reduce the problems of cutting trees for fire logs which is a part of “Deforestation ”. It doesn’t need any electricity, gas power & battery power.

WHY LEAF LOGS??? Basically, cutting of trees is a part of “DEFORESTATION”. Now we choose the leaves because of they are available in the landfills, due to if they left, can produce the methane. So, we used that leaves which is easily compressible and when burnt produce only carbon-di-oxide which taken by trees.
CALORIFIC VALUE Leaves can give 14MJ/Kg ( approx ). W ood can give 18MJ/Kg ( approx ). So, leaf logs combines positives of wood and leaves. Leaf logs with combination of resin concentrate can reach 19.532 MJ/Kg .
STAGE-I 3D MODELLING This PRO/E is verily useful for us to model our pre-design of our project. We used PRO/E Wildfire V5.0 which is fast, reliable to design our project. It is user-friendly and easy to understand. It saves our time on the basis of changing the machine dimension, calculations and mostly a animated view of the working.

STAGE-III NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT) The NDT which we used to detect the flaws, cracks in the welded joints. There are many methods for the testing, but we prefer the “LIQUID PENETRATION METHOD”. This method is very cheap and easy to do make the testing. NDT helps us to check the cracks in our project and fabricate it in a optimistic way.

STAGE-IV PROJECT MANAGEMENT Project management is done with “PRIMAVERA” is a software which is project management oriented which is developed by ORACLE. This software is very helpful to schedule and manage our project. The time management, budget over-heading, from this PRIMAVERA made us to do our project in a logical manner.

CALCULATION INVOLVED We used the torque loading calculating in this “LEAF LOG MAKER MACHINE”. Torque(N-mm) = Load(N)xLead(mm)/ 2 πη This formulae is for the loading capacity of the lead screw which is the back-bone of our project.

APPLICATIONS Suitable for villages. To reduce the deforestation for fire wood purpose. By making as pellets, can be used as insect repellents(when natural resins like neem sap etc.,). It is not depended by electricity, battery power etc.,
CONCLUSION It is portable, easy of access and user-friendly. We made it for village peoples. It can also compress the output products like paper bricks, pellets etc., by changing the mould.
FUTURE WORKS An automated leaf log maker which can produce 6 leaf logs at once.
