What is a Resume? A  résumé , sometimes spelled  resume  (or alternatively  resumé ) It is a document created and used by a person to present their background, skills, and accomplishments. Résumés can be used for a variety of reasons, but most often they are used to secure new employment. The word "résumé" comes from the French word  résumer  meaning 'to summarize’.

What is a Resume? In many contexts, a résumé is typically limited to one or two pages of size  A4  or  letter-size , highlighting only those experiences and qualifications that the author considers most relevant to the desired position. Make heavy use of active verbs, and display content in a flattering manner. Acronyms and credentials after the applicant's name should be spelled out fully in the appropriate section of the résumé to increase the likelihood they are found in a computerized keyword scan.

Criteria for Effective Resume There are two basic approaches for writing a resume: 1) Reverse Chronological Resume 2) Functional Resume

Reverse Chronological Resume We will use this approach if we are going to apply for the traditional job And hope to enter in the profession in which you get certification or college training . Have made steady progress in one field or profession. Plan to stay in your present professional.

Functional Resume And we will use this resume If you are a nontraditional job applicant. And applied in the field in which you didn’t receive any certification or collage training. Plan to change job frequently. Plan to enter a new profession.

Ethical considerations when writing a Resume If you write an inaccurate information your employer can find out The employer can double check your assertions He can verify you experience etc Make sure your resume is ethical and honest 1. include a degree you haven’t earned 2. listing college you haven’t attended 3. inflating your job title

Summary of Qualification After career objectives, provide your audience a summary of qualification Resume normally gets 15 second glance at the first screening It tells the employer how can you add value to the company Summary of Qualification should include An overview of your skills, attributes, accomplishments Your strengths in relation to the position for which you are applying How will you meet the employer’s goals.

Employment Enlist the jobs you have held Information must be provided in reverse chronological order Your job title The name of the company where you have worked The location of the company The time period Your jobs duties, responsibilities and accomplishments

Education School Attended: Don’t abbreviate For example UT Readers do not know UT means University of Texas Location: Include the city and state Year of Graduation

Education Y ou can mention GPA Grades Special class projects Academic honors, scholarships, awards Running a club or society Any volunteer work during studies

Professional Skills Proficiency with computer hardware and software Communication. On the job training Ability to Work Under Pressure. Decision Making. Time Management. Self-motivation. Conflict Resolution.

Professional Skills Publication or research articles you have produced Certifications you have earned Language you speak, or write

Structure You should be consistent in structure to make it easier for reader to go through your resume without any confusion. Font Size and Style: Size 12-14 and Calibri. Bold: For name and positions and other key factors. Spacing: Just about 1-2 lines. Paper Size and Color: A4 and White. Italicize Achievements: What’s your major development. It should be reader friendly

Avoid Sentences This may cause the repetition of personal pronouns. like; I and Me etc. May cause some Grammatical Errors. May take room in your resume, by making it longer than necessary. But make your points using some bullets.

Use Action Verbs To convey positive or some assertive tone always use action verbs. Present Tense Verbs: For current jobs and education. Past Tenses: For past jobs and education Rather to show your skills, you have to prove your skills by using some quantifiers. Example: Maintained positive customer relations with 500 retailer and 100 wholesale dealer.
