Mr. Abdiweli Mohamed Abdi
Applied epidemiology

Data collection
Data
Types of data
Sources of data
Primary Data Collection
Secondary Data Collection
2

Data is raw or unorganized form such as alphabet,
number or symbols, that need to be processed.
When data is processed and organized to make it
useful, it is called information. .

DATA
3

4

Primary Data:
Definition: Primary data refers to data that is
collected firsthand by the researcher specifically
for the research project at hand.
5

Collection Process: Researchers gather
primary data through methods like:
 interviews
 observations,
 blood, body fluid, urine, feces,
 Imaging (X-ray, US, CT, MRI)
6

Sources of epidemiological primary data
1] Research / studies
 observational (Descriptive and analytics)
Experimental (clinical and quasi trials)
2] Surveillance (passiive and active)
3] Screening programs
 general and specific screening
7

Common primary data collection tools
1. Questionnaires 2. Google form 3. Kobo tool box
8

Advantages & Disadvantages of Primary Data
Advantages
Data interpretation is better
Addresses Specific
Research Issues
Greater Control
More reliable
Disadvantages
o High Cost
o Time Consuming
o Inaccurate
 Feed-backs
o More number of
resources is required
9

Secondary Data:
Definition: Secondary data refers to data
that has been collected by someone else
for a different purpose or project, and is
utilized by researchers for their own
investigations.
10

Sources of epidemiological secondary data
Secondary data can be sourced from
various websites, databases, government
reports, academic journals, and
internationally recognized organizations
(World bank, WHO , IMF)
11

Journals
Books
Magazines
Newspaper
Libraries
Websites
Medical records

Advantages & Disadvantages of Secondary
Data
Advantages
Ease of Access
Low Cost to Acquire
Clarification of Research
Question
May Answer Research
Question
Disadvantages
o Quality of Research
o Not Specific to
Researcher’s Needs
o Incomplete Information
o Not Timely
