LeCom at SSAP A short version of our New Lecoms ’ Orientation/Training. This is how we do it in SSAP not to be compared with other Parishes Pls visit our parish website: ssaparish.com for more detailed guidelines and helpful links.

SPEAKER’S NOTES Like other Parishes, SSAP has its own way of celebrating the Holy Mass. We made a commitment to serve at SSAP and to follow its guidelines and instructions as provided in our LeCom Manual. So let us ALL serve the way it was designed. Let us be proud of SSAP’s style. Before 2014 new LeComs were trained in different ways, some only had a mic test. So this talk is meant to bring awareness to all of us that we have to be uniformed and to point out some things we have taken forgranted .

SSAP LECOMS ARE NOT UNIFORMED IF YOU WANT TO FOLLOW ME, DENY YOURSELF. MATTHEW 16:24 HE MUST INCREASE, I MUST DECREASE. JOHN 3:30 -RINGING OF THE BELL AFTER PRE-MASS ANNOUNCEMENT -HOLDING OF BOOK OF GOSPELS *RETURN BOOK FACING CONGREGATION* -PROCESSION-NO STOPPING FOR LECTOR! -BOWING-PROFOUND BOW! -MASS/GOSPEL INTRODUCTION-NO ADLIBS -INITIATING LAMB OF GOD READ OUR GUIDELINES AND FOLLOW THEM

SPEAKER’S NOTES It might help to keep these two verses in mind whenever we serve: Matthew 16:24, “If you want to follow me, deny yourself…..” John 3:30, “ It is necessary that he increase, but that I decrease.” Let us deny ourselves of our personal style s or preferences when we serve. Remove one’s self and follow the directives of the Parish we chose to serve as LeCom so we could be united with our Parish. Let us be proud of SSAP’s way. PRE-MASS ANNOUNCEMENT Take note! All will now be announced 3 minutes before the start of mass. RINGING OF THE BOWL (after pre-mass announcement) This is the “Call to order” bell. Hit the bell on the side, not the top. How? wait for the reverberation of the sound to die down before you ring again or use this rhythm...bong 23456, bong 23456, bong 23456 Ringing of bell at the back is the “Call to procession” bell HOLDING OF BOOK OF GOSPELS: Show your face, smile or sing! Show how happy you are that you have the honor of carrying it.. MASS/GOSPEL INTRODUCTION Let us stick to the script! Read it, do not try to memorize it to avoid ad lib. Read w ord for word : “Good afternoon! We welcome you as we celebrate the Eucharist today, ….” It is NOT “ Welcome, brothers and sisters!…..” It is: “To honor the Gospel, pls. rise!“ NOT “Pls. rise for the Gospel” When we introduce the Presider, always introduce name in full, with OFM at the end

SPEAKER’S NOTES BOWING In SSAP, we d o the profound bow. We do not genuflect, we do not nod nor do a head bow, we bow our upper body. When? As soon as we come out of our pew, bow to the altar table before walking up to the ambo. As soon as we step down from the ambo, we bow again facing the altar table, before returning to the pew. For Sunday lectors, when we pick up the Book of Gospels before we join the procession line. Pickup the Book from the altar table, while facing the congregation, bow, then walk away. Adjust the book stand so you can easily return the Book to the stand after the procession. At the end of the processional, the lector is the only one who does not stop at the foot of the steps like the rest. You are the only one who walks all the way up to the altar table. -

*NEW PROCEDURE RETURNING THE BOOK OF GOSPELS, AS SHOWN IN THE VIDEO : Lector passes by the right side of altar table, goes around to face congregation, places Book of Gospels on stand, steps back a couple of times then gives a profound bow facing the congregation. Lector then proceeds to the Lector’s pew, as shown in the video on our LeCom page at ssaparish .com. ( It is important for Lector to adjust the place of book stand, when he/she picks up Book for procession. He/she should be able to reach it to put back the Book comfortably in the stand, after the procession without taking up all the space of table.)

3 LECOM ROLES IN SSAP In SSAP, LeComs may serve as -LECTOR -COMMENTATOR -LECOM (doing both Lector and Commentator roles) for Weekday and Condo/Village masses

TEAMWORK! LECTOR & COMMENTATOR ARE PARTNERS! KNOW YOUR ROLE, SUPPORT EACH OTHER, WORK TOGETHER PRESIDER IS BOSS!! LET HIS VOICE BE LOUDER, GET TO KNOW HIM, WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK PRESIDER BEFORE MASS. MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH PRESIDER AND YOUR PARTNER THROUGHOUT, WORK TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE MASS AS IT WAS INTENDED, MAKING SURE EVERYTHING GOES WELL MASS IS A CELEBRATION SO LET IT SHOW IN OUR FACE AND VOICE. LOOK HAPPY IN PROCESSING IN AND AT RECESSIONAL, LOOK FRIENDLY WITH YOUR PARTNER, CONGREGATION, OTHER SERVERS! :)

SPEAKER’S NOTES TEAMWORK Lector-Commentator of a mass are partners. You should support each other. Work together to allow presider to celebrate mass smoothly. Make eye contact with your Presider and your partner in case one needs something (a misplaced book, need eyeglasses or water). Be a step ahead and think of what Presider might need or the mass needs. This is important during Christmas time, when only the lector has eye contact with the Presider. The commentator’s view of Presider is blocked by the Belen. PRESIDER IS BOSS! It is important to coordinate with Presider before the mass. Let his voice be louder if he decides to recite the prayers in its entirety, do not compete with the presider’s voice. Soften your voice but continue reciting with him, so that if he suddenly stops or coughs, your voice can still be heard by the congregation. Get to know our Friars, do they reflect after Homily or Communion? Serve at different time slots or take note when you’re at mass with a Presider you have not served with.

SUNDAY LECTOR SUNDAY LECTOR *SACRED ROLE – CHRIST SPEAKS THROUGH US PROCLAIM THE WORD OF THE LORD ONLY and BRING IT TO LIFE! PREPARE DAYS BEFORE YOU SERVE TO FEEL THE MESSAGE. BRING LIFE TO THE READINGS WITHOUT CALLING ATTENTION TO YOURSELF. BE CONSIDERATE TO THE PRESIDER: -PUT AWAY THE LECTIONARY, WHEN SHARING THE AMBO WITH PRESIDER FOR SUNDAY MASSES WAIT FOR CREED TO FINISH BEFORE RETURNING TO THE AMBO FOR PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL. DO NOT LEAVE AMBO UNTIL YOU FINISH WITH “AMEN” (IN SYNC WITH COMMENTATOR). CLOSE BOOK OF GOSPELS BEFORE LEAVING AMBO. -PARTICIPATE! SING ALONG OR MIMIC EVEN IF YOU ARE IN LECTORS’ PEW. -DO A PROFOUND BOW BEFORE GOING UP AND UPON LEAVING THE AMBO.

SPEAKER’S NOTES WHO DOES WHAT? LECTOR - shorter task but sacred role of proclaiming the word of the Lord ONLY and bringing it to life without being distracting or calling attention to self. -Eliminate saying “Responsorial Psalm” or “Response” after each verse. Instead, look up to the congregation to let them know you are done with each verse. No need to use hand gesture too. Eliminate “Let the response be” and go directly to reciting the actual response after the pause of THANKS BE TO GOD. -Be considerate to our Presider. If you share the ambo with the Presider, remove the Lectionary when you finish the Readings except on weekdays when the Presider uses the lectionary, not the Book of Gospels. -Wait for the Creed to finish before going to the ambo for Prayers of the Faithful. When you finish, wait for Presider’s part to finish then respond “amen” (in sync with Commentator). Close the Book of Gospels before you step down from the ambo. -USE OF SAMBUHAY Readings should always be direct from the Lectionary, not Sambuhay . OGF taught us there should not be Sambuhays at mass and many parishes actually don’t. Mass is supposed to be celebrated without a missalette. Assembly is supposed to rely on the lector, alone. So, Lectors, read each word clearly, mindful of the commas, periods and paragraphs at a good pace.

SUNDAY COMMENTATOR SUNDAY COMMENTATOR -COORDINATES EVERYTHING TO MAKE SURE CELEBRATION OF MASS RUNS SMOOTHLY, ON THE LOOKOUT FOR WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE e.g. more volunteers for collection -PICK PROPERLY DRESSED OFFERORS (close to table of gifts in the aisle) -COORDINATES WITH CHOIR (CORO?), LECTOR, PRESIDER - FULL NAME WITH OFM! ANY SPECIAL INTRO? -LEAD CONGREGATION TO PRAYERS INCLUDING SIGN OF THE CROSS OF OPENING PRAYERS AND IN GESTURES LIKE KNEELING THROUGHOUT CONSECRATION -HELP BRING TO LIFE EACH READINGS’ INTRODUCTION BY MAKING SURE ALL ARE SEATED BEFORE YOUR GREAT DELIVERY HEED YOUR PREMASS INSTRUCTION, PARTICIPATE! SO MIMIC THE SONGS TO ENCOURAGE SINGING END YOUR ANNOUNCEMENT WITH THANK YOU AND PLS. RISE (IF SEATED). JOIN PRESIDER AND SERVERS IN BOWING TO THE ALTAR AT THE PROCESSIONAL/RECESSIONAL.

SPEAKER’S NOTES SUNDAY COMMENTATOR - Gets offerors. - Know presider for proper introduction. - Talk to music ministry to know which prayers will be sung. If it is a Coro mass-6pm Sundays, the Coro will sing the entire Responsorial Psalm including all verses. Inform lector to stay in the ambo to sing along or mimic the responses. Say Sign of the Cross before and after Opening Prayers before the mass introduction. – Wait until all are seated before starting first reading introduction, visibly scaling the room so congregation will know you are waiting for them to settle down. You may have only a line or two for the reading introductions but it is an important part for the mindset for the actual reading so take your time to bring it to LIFE. - You lead the congregation to every prayer, every gesture so remember that we kneel throughout consecration and only rise after the Great Amen. Heed your own pre-mass announcement, participate! Sing (away from mike or turn off mike) or mimic. - For Sunday masses, if short on collection volunteers, you may request for volunteers. (A script can be found in commentator’s guidebook) - USE of Sambuhay for commentators are for Order of Mass on that day ONLY, prayers should be read directly from the guidebook, which contains all prayers. Anticipate the unexpected in case a Presider adds a prayer not included in the Sambuhay or Order of Mass.

USE OF SAMBUHAY VS LECTIONARY/SUNDAY GUIDEBOOK LECTOR-READINGS SHOULD BE READ FROM LECTIONARY NOT SAMBUHAY COMMENTATOR-USE BOTH: SAMBUHAY IS A GUIDE TO THE DAY’S ORDER OF MASS -YOU’LL SEE WHICH PRAYERS ARE TO BE READ FROM THE GUIDEBOOK -CONTAINS ANTIPHON FOR THE WEEK IF ORDINARY TIME, FOR WEEKDAY LECTORS GUIDEBOOK HAS COMPLETE PRAYERS WITH INSTRUCTIONS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

SPEAKER’S NOTES Readings should always be read straight from the Lectionary, not Sambuhay ! OGF taught us that there should not be Sambuhays at mass and many parishes actually don’t. Mass is supposed to be celebrated without a missalette. Assembly is supposed to rely only on the lector.. . If you have to bring notes to ambo, use a diary or leather folder to cover it. Use of Sambuhay or Missalette by commentator is meant as a guide for the day’s order of mass, to know which prayers will be used for the day’s mass. The Guidebook (at the Lectern/Ambo) contains the introduction, all responses and prayers that we need to read from not the Sambuhay , in case of misprints on the Sambuhay . Anticipate the unexpected because the Presider may add a prayer not included in the Order of Mass or Sambuhay .
