1. Methods of Social Work

2. Definition of Method A method refers to a regular and systematic way of accomplishing something or doing something. A method refers to an artistic or skilful way of doing something.

3. Social Work Methods Social work methods is such method that social workers use to help people of all ages and from various sections of society to enhance their social functioning and to cope more effectively with their problems.

4. Categories of Methods Social Work Methods are generally divided into two categories A. Primary Methods B. Secondary Methods

5. Primary Methods Primary means basic to something, or before all others. The primary methods of social work are the methods in which social worker directly deal with individuals at the individual, group and community level.

6. These three methods are: Social Casework Social Groupwork. Community Organization

7. Secondary Methods The dictionary meaning of the word secondary is “ something not primary or major; or subordinate to something else. The Secondary Methods of Social Work are those systematic ways of enhancing well-being which do not involve working directly with individuals at individual, group and/or community level. 

8. Secondary Methods are: 1 . Social Welfare Administration 2. Social Research 3. Social Policy and Action

9. 1. Social Case Work It is a method which is based on one to one relationship . According to H.H. Perlman Case Work process (5 ‘Ps’ ): “{P} erson with a {P} roblem come to a {p}lace where a {P} rofessional representative, help him by a given {Process}.

10. Case Work Components 1. Person: refers to a client or a person who is in need of help or support. 2. Problem: a situation which hampered his/her normal social functioning in society such as u nemployment, drug addiction, depression, crime etc. 3. Place: Refers to a social welfare agencies which have both human and financial resources which is employed for the solution and rehabilitation of person’s problems

11. 4. Professional Representative: Refers to a Professional Social Worker who have knowledge and skill for exploring and solution of client’s problem. 5. Process: Refers to case work method which consist of: a) Study of the client’s profile and problem b) Diagnosis : Professional opinion on the basis client’s history c) Treatment & Rehabilitation: d) Follow-up

12. Social Group Work According to Reid (1997) the purpose of group work is to help improve the well being of the members and relieve personal suffering. This is accomplished because groups have the ‘power to enhance problem-solving capacity, prevent the development of serious social problems, and restore and maintain the social functioning of members’. Group work is used in all settings of social work .
